We just came back from Vicksburg and left disappointed. To be honest we were shocked at the lack of interest the locals had in the historic district or the history of the town. "I don't fool with all that history stuff," came from a very nice, but disinterested hotel employee when we asked about the national park. The historic downtown district was disjointed with hotel furniture shops, a Fred's, a couple of antique shops and some art/curoisity shops interspaced in between empty shop windows.

We met a nice couple at a local bar and they told us they didn't know why the tourist/historic angle wasn't played up more. It's killing me because the stories of those people living under seige has captured my imagination, and while I would have LOVED to see a museum on that; I instead learned that the caves were bulldozed. I saw in an antiques shop volumes of records from funeral homes for sale instead of being sent to the local library to be kept in the reference section.

Oh my gosh Vicksburg y'all have so much history and I think lots of people would love to make their way to your little city to soak that up. So what's up? Where are the historical societies? What's the local government doing to attract tourists?

I liked Vicksburg when I was there, I really liked the area around the MS and casinos. Coming from South Louisiana, I loved the elevation and the natural beauty of going to central/northern Mississippi.

Default Vicksburg worth a day

I lived and worked in Vicksburg (Warren County) for 16 years. A lot of visitors could relate to what the above write stated. However, if you want to find out the best places to see and what to do in Vicksburg the best place to start is the Old Courthouse Museum. It is 10 minutes from I-20 to the doorstep and a great place to start your visit. From there the folks who work at the Museum can point you in the right direction for the rest of the day (or night)!
