We will be leaving New Orleans on December 27. We have to be in North Carolina by January 01. What should we see in Mississippi? We are considering either the west side into Marigold and Clarksdale (Blues)or the east side with Hattiesburg and Meridian (historical / Civil War).
Either way we come through Birmingham back to Fayetteville, NC.

We are spending some time in Biloxi / Ocean Springs. We are anxious to try the shrimp mixed with some blues.

If you don't need to go in a straight line directionwise, you could go to the Armed Forces Museum in Hattiesburg and also do the Freedom Trail (check Visitor's Center for map and brochure)
The Natchez area is about three hours west and then from the Natchez Trace you could gp on to Jackson and up to the Blues country in Clarksdale.
There is also a Blues Trail through the state. Do some googling---and Vicksburg near Jackson, if you have the time, is Civil War galore. The Corinth area is also prime Civil War.

I'd suggest Tishomingo State Park in the Northeastern corner of the state. It'd be near Shiloh battlefield in Tenn., and nearby Corinth has some civil war stuff too.

Tish is a beautiful place with air-conditioned cabins for rent. It'd be a nice place to go off the beaten path, but may not jive with your traveling routes.

My favorite thing to do in Mississippi was to drive the Natchez Trace Parkway. I drove the segment between Jackson and Natchez. It was awe inspiring. I loved it. And I will miss it. I also drove the segment from Tupelo to Nashville, which was beautiful, too.

Yes I did and I loved it. I really loved the terrain and simple atmosphere. Truth is, however, I am a yankee (from CT) and it would be a major cultural change for me if I moved to MS. I don't have a southern accent and I'm 100% italian. I would stick out like a sore thumb lol.

We really don't have a set "direction" we need to go. Since we are coming from 5 days in NOLA, we thought going north into MS would be a great visit. There seems to be so much to see. That Natchez Trace PArkway sounds beautiful. How long is it? Is it similar to the Blueridge as a scenic drive?
I would really love to see Clarksdale and stand at the Crossroads..
My wife and I both love history--particularly cultural / Americana. We just wonder how much we can see in 4 days. We won't see it all, but we can always return, right?
Oh, we will be pulling our 33 foot 5th wheel as we travel through MS.
