I see they've decriminalized marijuana, sounds kind of progressive but never hear about any cool cities.

For you, probably the Coast or in the Memphis metro area, and maybe Hattiesburg due to being a college town and good location near New Orleans, Florida and the MS Coast.

On the Coast, Ocean Springs, Biloxi, or Bay St. Louis would be good choices. Near Memphis, DeSoto County is a suburban area, but it's pretty close to downtown Memphis which is pretty cool.

Oxford and Natchez are beautiful but pretty conservative.

I guess it depends on what "cool" means? There are some nice areas for living and workng that would accommodate a really nice lifestyle---meaning affordable, aesthetically pleasing communities with amenities for leisure and cultural pursuits. But not much in the way of--"Hey, I just have to visit such and such because of its----" Except maybe--I will agree with others-- Natchez and the coastal area.

It depends on where you want to be at in the state. Northern part (Southaven, Memphis area), Central (Jackson metro, Vicksburg (gambling), or Southern part (MS Gulf Coast). Your choice all of them area nice.

Oxford may be conservative by US standards, but it didn't seem particularly so by Mississippi terms. Hattiesburg has a downtown that isn't fully there yet but is starting to revitalize--definitely has the college town vibe. Starkville is okay. Tupelo is not bad.

But "cool"? How vague can you get? Mississippi doesn't have big cities; the biggest of course is Jackson, and it has a few urban neighborhoods that have what the OP might be looking for: Fondren and Belhaven come to mind.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to be in areas with high danger of hurricanes, tornadoes or floods. Also, I don't drive and have a young son so am looking for safe areas, biking distance to stores, near woods and nature, and to top it all off where I could buy a liveable fixer upper for around $10,000.

Jackson is fine. But Jackson is still very small if you from New England. If you are not limit to Mississippi, Nashville or Brimingham, Tuscaloosa are petty cool towns.

While the state of Mississippi has decriminalized marijuana possession of less than 30g, most local communities, counties, and municipalities maintain strict, zero tolerance ordinances regarding possession. Thousands of Mississippians are arrested each month for possession of less than 30g of marijuana.

If you're thinking of moving here to smoke marijuana, please go somewhere else.

Bike to stores; near woods; $10,000; no tornadoes......
That's a tall order! Not around Tupelo, I'm afraid.
