Okay, I have been browsing several southern cities for potential places to live, and I am never going to get everything I want, so I decided to make a list of things that appeal to me and ask people what cities in the south they think are best in each category, even if not in the state I'm posting in -- I'm hoping you all have been able to partake of what's good in other cities near you. Let me say I am not interested in Texas (where I am now) so we can just cross that off the list (sorry Texas, nothing personal) Also note schools are irrelevant as I do not have kids and won't be having them...except the furry kind. Also I'm of cougarish age demographic and single and am an urbanized redneck ;-)

1. Cheapest cost of living in or NEAR a major metropolitan area (within an hour drive)
2. Best restaurants/foodie scene
3. Best art scene, without the cliquey snobbery
4. Most authentic southern vibe however you define it
5. Best music scene - local (open to many genres, including rock, punk, blues and country or Americana)
6. Best music scene national, as far as artists coming through for country music (besides Nashville, which is pretty much a no-brainer)
7. Best sense of community
8. Outdoorsy sports opportunities
9. Least humid and prone to hurricanes ;-)

If you remove 1 and 9 New Orleans fits the list

I think, one by one, you have eliminated every city in Mississippi.

I'd look at Huntsville, Al.

See now, how much you guys already helped me? It's good to know I just eliminated Mississippi. I do have a friend who just told me I need to give up and come to NOLA as I am destined to be there.

Not trying to steer you away from New Orleans, but if you have decided the threat of hurricanes is no big deal, and you are seriously thinking about moving there then you may want to consider Ocean Springs.

Ocean Springs is an hour from Mobile (City population 195,000 and metro population 412,000), and an hour and a half from New Orleans.

Laid-back in Ocean Springs - Southern Living

Ocean Springs Art Association

Welcome to The Art House

The Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center of Arts and Education

Welcome to the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce

You have not seen humidity until you spend a rainy August afternoon in New Orleans.

My thoughts went straight to New Orleans. And I agree that Mississippi is not the best place for your listed items. Are you considering the Carolinas at all? Charleston, NC might be an option if you are.

I have many cities I am interested in, but trying not to influence people choices. I really do want a breakdown, as the weight of individual factors varies and the end decision will come down to which factor I end up weighing most heavily.
