Mississippi comes in at #30. Maybe we should follow Louisiana's path to attract more business and industry to our state. They went from #47 to #13.

Meanwhile, California has slipped from #1 to #50. Dead last. An exerpt from the article:

"Each year, the evidence that businesses are leaving California or avoid locating there because of the high cost of doing business due to excessive state taxes and stringent regulations, grows. (See “Eastward Ho!”) According to Spectrum Locations Consultants, 254 California companies moved some or all of their work and jobs out of state in 2011, an increase of 26 percent over the previous year and five times as many as in 2009."

California makes up 12% of the US population, but one third of the nations' welfare recipients.

Going from 38 to 30 isn't bad. But Mississippi's going to have to drastically improve its public education system to go much farther.

Yeah. The only state that rose more than Mississippi was Louisiana - 14 places to number 13. Maybe some of what Louisiana has going for it will bleed over to Mississippi. But Louisiana has very few bragging rights insofar as education goes. Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas are always elbowing each other for 49th place. No one wants to be last!

What Louisiana does have, though, is a Republican Senate, House of Representatives, and Governor. And most importantly, Louisiana has term limits for legislators, which ended the service for many members in 2007. Evidently, term limits for legislators is a good thing.

Saw this the other day regarding Alabama's manufacturing boom.

Alabama's sweet manufacturing boom - Apr. 11, 2012

Mississippi isn't too different from Alabama.... Seems like we could learn a thing or two when it comes to attracting businesses to our state.
