Off the beaten path? Water Valley. Drive through the neighborhoods off Main Street near downtown to see old, unique houses.

Also hit Oxford and Clarksdale.

Clarksdale is run-down, not "quaint". Also Oxford has turned into a boomtown beyond its "quaint" downtown.

This is why I suggested Oxford and Clarksdale...

Oxford for the square, Ole miss, Rowan Oak, etc. and Clarksdale for the Blues history, crossroads, Hopson Plantation, Ground Zero, etc.

Clarksdale gets visitors from around the world to see the blues history and hear the music. If that's your thing you may want to check it out, if not then yes, Clarksdale is run-down... it's part of why the Blues originated in the Mississippi Delta in the first place.

Just thought that may be interesting to see at least once.

I'm from Union Co originally and New Albany is a great town to visit. Also you could try the down town part of Pontotoc. If you are in to wildlife or nature there are several lakes and parks in the area and there is a wolf sanctuary outside New Albany in Pinedale (my hometown )

Holly Springs does not have much going on today, but in 1860 it was an important place and there are a number of historic homes. It was Gen. Grant's headquarters for about six months as he planned the siege of Vicksburg. The museum is worth a visit and it's worth a drive around town to look at the homes. The cemetery is unusual, and 13 of Mississippi's 26 Confederate generals are buried there, as is Sen. Hiram Revels, Mississippi's first black senator.

A half-day in Holly Springs follow by a short drive to Oxford and time spent touring the town and campus and enjoying one of the excellent restaurants would make for a great day. Or two.

Water valley is 20 minutes from Oxford. Oxford has great restaurants and excellent shopping around the courthouse square. There are beautiful old homes. Water Valley is quiet and has really interesting historic homes, an old drug store with soda fountain (try the milkshakes), a nice farmers market, and some galleries. Canton is 30 minutes north of Jackson. Nicely maintained town square with shopping.
