People sling around the term "third world country" with such nonchalance, that it seems everyone has been to several. But some of us really have.

I watched children play in a muddy, sewage filled ditch in The Philippines, while their mother attempted to do laundry in the same ditch.

I came home from Africa with what I thought was a cyst. Then I gave birth to a 3/4 inch bot fly maggot. Alive, and doing very well. There are plenty of videos; check one out.

I saw the filthy Gypsy woman sleeping along the road in Spain. No one paid her any attention, and there was nowhere for her to go.

I saw where the Argentine police had bulldozed cardboard shacks, that were once home to hundreds. The police didn't care where they went.

Running water? In Ghana? Maybe in the cities......

Third world? Not in these United States.

You are busting all these peoples bubble. Who will they pick on if they don't have Mississippi. They already ignore dumps in several northern states. In their eyes, only Mississippi has poor people.

I bet these people comparing Mississippi to a third world country have crippling "first world problems".

First World Problems, also known as “White Whine,” are frustrations and complaints that are only experienced by privileged individuals in wealthy countries. It is typically used as a tongue-in-cheek comedic device to make light of trivial inconveniences.

I was in the Delta just today and said hey... this ain't so bad. What's everyone on City Data complaining about, this is kind of nice.

Of course, I was sitting in the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica when I said it, so that might affect my judgment of the Delta a bit.

Could be, but would you rather be sitting there or in South Chicago?

Yeah. me, too.

No one has said that. But Mississippi does have the highest poverty rate, the highest obesity rate, the highest teen pregnancy rate, and routinely ranks 1st or 2nd in the most unhappy state. It's last in all the rankings and first in the negative ones for a reason. No state is without its poor, but not every state has the widespread poverty that Mississippi experiences.

I'd rather be in South Chicago than the Delta. A LOT more opportunities there and things to do, and if you aren't affiliated with drugs or organized crime, you are very unlikely to be shot or killed in South Chicago.

You can drive four blocks in New York city to experience the same thing, same with Los Angeles, nothing new here or even nothing new anywhere, yes the delta is poor, thats why they have to go down to the cross roads like robert johnson!

You can drive four blocks in NYC or LA to experience the same thing as... what, exactly?

What are you talking about?
