I went to Hattiesburg once, and it was god awful. Nothing to do. And this is a college town! I guess the Bible Belt bible thumping wackos don't want anyone to have fun. At least they have some casinos in Biloxi so that wasn't bad.

What's so bad about Mississippi? I think that THIS should offer some clues: Jackson Jambalaya: Someone doesn't like losing I presume this footage was captured in a condo, somewhere in Oxford, paid for by somebody's daddy. At Ole Miss, you're nobody if your "yir daaaaayid" doesn't buy you "uh cawndo".

I hope this video doesn't disappear like the one of Pam Nail, Mrs. World, looking cute in an all-black après le tennis ensemble, getting booked for drunk driving by Madison Police.
____________
Oops! I was wrong. This was lensed in Baton Rouge. Miss Ashley had been gone from Mississippi for over a month, when this special moment was captured. And I would like to add that the feminine singular for 'alumni' is 'alumna' (although, apparently, she is neither) - and the 'author' of the article should have used 'awakened' where he used 'woken up'. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/sport...loss-lsu-video

But what I really want to know is, what is Ashley making on the stove? Roux Blanc? Meth? Corndog Batter?

GrandviewG, What's your point, that Miss is the only state with drunken kids, rich parents that overspend on their offspring, and weird news stories? Try reading the Floriduh blog.

There are lots of stupid drunken college kid videos on you tube, some even from Oregon. You assume this is a privileged kid with her own condo (paid for by daddy), I kinda doubt it, the place hardly looks grand. She just looks like an immature drunken brat to me. And every state has drunks, idiots and pompous know it all's.

Wonder if she hates Auburn as much as LSU?

It has been 34 years and you would think things would be vastly different in the race department. I still have relatives there and I am shocked at how much racism still exist. I'm sure that doesn't represent all people of course. I love Mississippi for its beauty, friendly ways and it has everything else but the racism is a deal breaker. I sadly realized I could never live there again. We always thought we would retire there. An example from 1979: I worked for the circuit clerk in Hattiesburg. They had a "white" book and a "black" book for marriage license. I told them I couldn't do that and one book was ordered. This week I heard a similar story. Heartbreaking.
Surprisingly, I agree with you. Here in Jackson, it is extremely tough for the minority race....

I lived most of my life in south Mississippi. I Homeschooled three strong open minded young adults who challenge every idea and system that isn't beneficial to local & world culture, economy, & who hopefully are working on leading Mississippi & America. Both of my daughters graduated top of their nursing classes. The younger( who was the Only one in her class to graduate with honors & RN at 18)has traveled to Europe. My husband and I love a well educated disagreement among people we know and our kids love to help people through influence and the art of debate. I always like to try to mix it with a little humor, tact, and the love of God. I think we make Mississippi or where ever we are better when we represent and reflect the Jesus I love. I disagree with many box checking churchhouse attenders. Cultivating relationships in more organic gatherings works for me. I still challenge the box we try to put God in and things and systems that are not healthy for the body of Christ(mostly my own life and mind). If you feel the fake look for the real. Start with myself is the only way to affect the culture around us. (Although traditional organizations resist change, or attack it, love is the key. A little respectful disagreement Is good. I would like to influence people to be open minded to the truth, be self educated, responsible for both physical and cultural/social. Although I don't get into political debates, my family and friends like getting into disagreements and debates. My husband would love to move where nobody disagrees. Without challenge, how will truth, understanding, kindness and love prevail?
I hate how media always picks out the stereotypes and a few idiots to perpetuate to the world that image! When traveling to most of the national parks with my younger daughter, I had a southern French guy give a good impression of a super slow talking hick when I asked why he didn't think I talked with the accent he had seen on tv. I explained that I'm the other version (around people I know)that usually thinks even faster tan I talk, so a compact sentence slurred into non traditionally contracted words into a single breath, composed of the few words that are running through my mind as correct English, but are dropped because My mouth can't keep up with the Ferrari brain( which has bicycle brakes). I usually talk in my much more normal phone voice especially to strangers, hopefully with more structure and eloquence. But always southern charm. Most People are friendly in the south unless you're a jerk or an idiot or what I would call a northern hick.
Now speaking about the subject of obesity, we do cook better tasting food. I want to see more healthy eating options, more things to do besides eat, watch tv, Hunt,Fish& play video games. I guess you have to organize & develop your local culture instead of saying I wish they had more & why can't we just move to another state ( or country)where someone taught their kids not to throw trash out their window on the way home. Recycle or just don't be trashy. Care has to be taught.
I was taught to Treat people with respect and even love even if they don't deserve it(the other part of my family that will just beat some respect into you is dwindleing thanks to my infiltration & the Lord's love)but part of me will demand respect and will stand up for what is right and defend with the truth. What makes Mississippi great is the genuine good caring people that you usually run across. Small town America is basically the same. Same strengths & same problems. Each person makes a difference even if there are differences, the balance and struggle for what is good for just one individual or group and what is supposed to be good for masses(one rule fits all mentality to prevent chaos )& the way we develop our culture based on what is good for the needs of the people to grow and succeed will depend on how we implement our care about and work out differences with people who aren't exactly like us & how we live everyday & work creatively and efficiently to make our cultures do environment better. I would like to see more organic, local people lead structures. If we work on local levels of government developing healthy relationships with individuals in our neighborhood and in local political structure encouraging change in the local area. It will have ripple effect when people encourage one another to care based on truth and fact in love of course. But social reform comes one relationship at a time. Think on what is good & of good report if you want to be encouraged in any long term change . Developing awareness and collaboration doesn't hurt. It's nice internet gives us this chance and potential for hope and future changes. praying never seemed to hurt either.

I thought that they wanted me to come back for some reason. Eventually I got the intent. They wanted me to come back and visit again. LOL.

I did leave Mississippi for about 5-months one time. The homesickness I felt was greater than any homesickness I had when I left Indiana. I moved back and have been here ever since.

I do get aggravated at the subtle bullying that someone else mentioned. That is a fact that the bullying is subtle and it is done where only the victim understands they are being bullied. All observers are lacking in observation of the bullying. It is done very carefully and concise in that nobody hardly ever witnesses it. And if any complaints are made, gangs of people get together to back each other up. Eh...such is life.

I was even told by a southern born and bred belle that they do not want d....yankees here. Yikes! That is what I am! he he he

Concerning poverty and obesity: One would think of those two words in the same sentence as being an oxymoron IF they did not know that lack of money and obesity are common. Many people lack the money to buy healthy foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits and veggies. Fatback, fatty cuts of pork, hot dogs, bologna and bags of thighs and drumstick chickens are sold for cheaper than meats that have less fat. Fresh foods and vegetables are outrageously expensive and the poor choose to buy the processed foods that are so much cheaper (and many more calories) to stretch out their food budget. They have little ones to fill their stomachs... so cheap, processed high calorie carbs such as noodles and cornmeal for cornbread is what one might see in their grocery carts. And if the poor wants a dessert, fresh fruit such as blueberries, strawberries and the like cost much more to buy for a family of four, six or eight than a gallon of fatty neopolitan ice cream or a bag of cheap trans fatty cookies. And many of them have no idea what they are eating. They only know that their stomachs are being filled for a few hours. They do not know that unhealthy foods makes the body store the fat and stimulate them to eat more.

It's such a viscous cycle that can be corrected by increasing the amount of food subsidies and restricting those subsidies to healthy foods and staple items. No cookies. No candy. No soda pops, potato chips and junk like that.

I've met some very educated and genteel folks in Mississippi. Mississippi is the home of the blues, rock and roll, great authors. Tupelo has the largest rural hospital in the nation. I see (and do so myself) black and white people hugging when they greet each other. We eat together. The children play together.

Mississippi has a torrid past and I'm not sure that it will ever lose that distinction of being a racist state, although many who want to defame Mississippi have never lived here long enough to actually experience the lifestyle. It is unique.

Every bad experience I had was when no one else was around and if I spoke up then no one would believe me because they never saw it. They would just back each other up and point the finger at me as if I were the problem!
