2. It's a big tourist destination. After Las Vegas and Atlantic City, Biloxi has the next most casinos of any city in the country. 9 in Biloxi and 2 in Gulfport right next door.
3. Beaches. There is a lot of beach front property, condos, and timeshares people have in the Biloxi-Gulfport area, this means it's a place a lot of people prefer to live.
4. It barely feels like Mississippi there, it's more similar to the Florida panhandle, southern, but not deep south southern.
5. You're close to a lot of other desirable cities. Gulfport is right next door, Mobile isn't but 40 miles, New Orleans is only 50 miles, Pensacola is about 60 miles, Panama City is about 100 miles.

Biloxi is a nice city if you don't mind it being dominated by casinos on the beach front area.
3. It's a lot of people who prefer to vacation there, aren't most of those condo's empty for good parts of the year?
4. It's certainly deep south, feels like an extension of Louisiana to me. Alabama feels slightly more Bama to me (sorry I know that makes little sense).

It doesn't feel much like Mississippi in the classical sense.

I lived in Hattiesburg MS from 2007-2011. Being a Yankee, when I left MS I was:

- More educated
- In better physical shape (lost 70 lbs)
- Wealthier

How does one achieve such things in a state that ranks the lowest in each category year after year?

Hey, just because Mississippi ranks low or near the bottom in many of these rankings, doesn't mean there aren't well educated and fit people there. I know some very brilliant people here in Mississippi, however I will say I know a lot fewer here than in other areas.

Education, physical fitness, and wealth are usually things that are in your power to change, it especially makes a difference if you aren't from here, because you have been exposed to other lifestyles and ways of life. It's just, the state norm doesn't place much emphasis on any of those things.

A DeltaDump? Hattiesburg is a fine Mississippi city. The presence of Southern Miss in that city has an enormous impact on the city. For a Mississippi city it's actually rather liberal and progressive. For a city its size it has a lot of decent amenities and a pretty nice little downtown as well. I have been to Hattiesburg several times, I'm very pleased with it.

Now, the one section of Mississippi that is near hopeless is the Delta. Vicksburg to Memphis is some of the most impoverished and backwater people, ideals, standards, and views you'll ever come across. The rest of Mississippi is way ahead of the Delta.

I stopped reading when I saw that you confused HBurg for the Delta. Please take a geography lesson my friend. The 2 locations are in completely different parts of the state.
