Alright, can anyone tell me if the cherry park subdivision in Clinton is a good area? We found a home for lease there. Also one in Oakhurst, waiting to hear back from the realtor about that one. Also, called a few people in Madison....when the listing says "reservoir", is that a good area in Madison?

I'll bring in another perspective, as someone who spent 20 odd years near Jackson.

If you're coming from Colorado, you undoubtedly know that Mississippi culture will be quite different. If you're a strongly liberal or libertarian type of person, you might find it worthwhile to make social connections in Jackson's Fondren and Belhaven neighborhoods (near the University Medical Center close to downtown), given they are somewhat more liberal in outlook than the surrounding area and hence more accustomed to non-traditional viewpoints and as such more in touch with the outside world. It also exposes your kids to a wider variety of different viewpoints than you would normally get in the suburbs.

If you and your family already have strong traditional values, then Madison is probably a more comfortable place. I'm just saying this in anticipation of any strong culture shock you may receive.

My husband and myself both lived in Lakecharles, LA for 7 years. So, I'd like to think we kinda know how the south is? My kids on the other hand....my oldest was two when we had to move back to Colorado. We were forced to leave after hurricane Rita destroyed the casino my husband worked for. Is Mississippi any different than Louisiana?

Mississippi (except for the Gulf Coast) is NOTHING like South Louisiana - particularly Lake Charles.

Mississippi is more like North Louisiana. Madison, Brandon, and Clinton are pretty much like Ruston. Vicksburg is more like Calcasieu Parish than is anywhere else in Mississippi (Except Gulfport-Biloxi).

Anyway, if your husband is still in the Casino business, I think that Madison is NOT where you need to be. Clinton would be a bad fit, too. And Brandon would be an absolute disaster. Best to live in Vicksburg, and put the kids into Catholic schools there.

Otherwise, if the Jackson Metro is some sort of 'must' for you, then Flowood or Pearl will be more your cup of tea. Maybe you should check out the rentals on the RANKIN COUNTY SIDE of the Reservoir (not as ugly as the name sounds: it's actually a huge, beautiful man-made lake - and the area has 'resort' status).

And why would those areas be a bad fit if my husbands career is with the casino industry?

I'm assuming it's because of long, irregular hours and being able to get to and from work quickly.
