I'm considering moving Mississippi to take a job in the Stennis Space Center. I have heard the stereotypes about MS and am worried I won't love it... I like the beach but I am also young (25) and single. From the sounds of it, many of the towns are great places to raise a family but what about nightlife etc? I'm not a huge party animal but where would be the best place to live where I can meet other people my age without having to drive an hour to work? Is there are a good young professionals community in the area? It seems like the majority of people on this forum are married and have different priorities in what they are looking for when relocating. Thanks for your input!

Check out Bay St. Louis. It's truly gorgeous, sitting on the corner of the Bay of St. Louis and the beaches along the Mississippi Sound. It's full of cottages and bungalows that are very affordable and has a great little downtown with several seafood restaurants and coffee shops etc right by the bay. The beachfront is wonderful for walking and running, with a path along the road just for that purpose. There is also a nice pier down by Waveland and the bridge over the bay from Bay St Louis to Pass Christian is simply gorgeous as a place for walking and running with a view of the bay and gulf further out. Bay St Louis is considered artsy.

If Bay St Louis is too small and quiet for you, then check out Biloxi (down I-10) which is a center for casinos, tourists, and also happens to big a military base, I believe where they train navy pilots. Some of the casinos are really fun (Hard Rock, Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville, Beau Rivage, and Golden Nugget. Biloxi would probably a 25 minute drive down I-10 from Stennis or maybe 30 minutes depending on where you're going in town. And right across the bay is Ocean Springs, which is probably the best place for night life and young people. Ocean Springs' downtown has several blocks of really nice bars and restaurants, a very artsy feeling, and a great community beachfront for walking, running, volleyball, fishing, etc. That would be a solid 30 minute drive down I-10 but at your age that's not a big deal at all.

I would live in Slidell or New Orleans and commute. Living in Slidell gives you the best of both worlds, depending on where you came from or the type of lifestyle you desire, Biloxi can be underwhelming after a while. Although the area is quite beautiful.

Fishgirl, as I go back and read your original email, I think Ocean Springs is where you want to be, at least in terms of nightlife. You don't necessarily have to live there to enjoy downtown Ocean Springs from a cultural perspective. As I said above, their beachfront is quaint and designed especially for walkers and runners. Every time I go, I can't get over how charming it is. Also, the center of downtown is Washington St and Government St I believe, driving or walking from there east down Government St for several blocks, especially at night it has a very sophisticated feel to it with a surprising number of restaurants and bars with outdoor patios etc. For a young female in your 20s, this seems like the place to go on evenings and weekends. That said, Bay St Louis is equally charming and perhaps even more beautiful because its downtown is perched up over the bay and it has a much bigger and longer beach. But I would say its much more quiet compared to downtown Ocean Springs and I would say more quirky/artsy whereas downtown Ocean Springs feels like the nice, cultured section of a larger city. Biloxi is so much fun and actually downtown Gulfport is really on the upswing with some super-cute new Italian restaurants, seafood, Irish pubs etc. But it just feels a little more urban compared to quaint and cozy Ocean Springs and Bay St Louis and uber-elegant Pass Christian - all three of which you almost want to eat with a spoon. I do think those apartments right on the border between Pass Christian and Long Beach look nice and new, are fairly large, and literally steps from the beach and a pretty good central location , yet quiet.

You should be fine. If you are a young female engineer, you should fine that most guys there does not have a engineering degree. So, take it easy about stereotype.
