You’ve all overlooked the quaint little town of Summit. It’s about halfway between New Orleans and Jackson. Downtown is full of interesting little shops and there’s even a Piggly Wiggly in town. Restaurants are casual and offer good veggies, meats, deli and bakery choices, creole food and the best donuts anywhere, not to mention a great catfish shack just a mile or so out of town. Crime is almost non-existent and there are churches of almost every demonination. People are friendly and welcoming. Private school is just a few miles down the road in McComb. It would be worthwhile to check out Summit.

"DeSoto County - This could be Kansas City or Plano, Texas, or Gwinnett County, Georgia. Lots and lots of jobs. Shiny, new homes. Safety, safety, safety. Schools! 4 mild seasons with a bit of snow, t fall colors, luxuriant springs and steamy summers. DeSoto County is the real America. It's full of newcomers from across the country.

You're 5 minutes from Target and 5 minutes from the movie theatre. The family loves the huge youth baseball complex and amphitheater. Several times a year they drive an hour to Oxford for football, basketball, and baseball games. DeSoto County is America in miniature, the good life indeed."

I will add Byhalia and Victoria as they border on De Soto County. Now the i-269 now open, you can live here with lower taxes, lower housing cost and still a quick commute.

Default I have a question

My husband lost his job after his employer suffered a heart attack. He is a paralegal. We have some funds but not enough to keep going for more then 3 months. We want to start all over again in a completely different state. We have kids and cats. What mid size city in Mississippi would you suggest? We are originally from Phoenix.

Midsize is different definition compared to Arizona. In Mississippi you're talking about a state where the capital city is only about 170,000. For a paralegal Jackson area, Southaven and the coast would be the best options.

Tupelo might fit.
Population 38,000 but there are several small towns nearby so it functions as a much larger town. Got a BIG hospital facility there.
New Albany is coming on nicely these days.

I'm not a fan of the area close to Memphis, but you might like it. A lot of people do.

I wish people would use metropolitan area population rather than the useless city limits. The metro area of Jackson has over 500,000 people.

Thank you for this post! I love Mississippi! Always have! Being from Louisiana, we go there quite often. Thinking about moving there.

Why do you view the city's metro as more substantial than it's core population?

Metro data is basically used for census data.
