This state has had a wealth of writers, from Richard Wright to Eudora Welty to John Grisham to Willie Morris, and, of course, William Faulkner. Is there anyone on this list that's the best, or is there someone else?

Shelby Dade Foote, Jr. (November 17, 1916 – June 27, 2005) was an American historian and novelist who wrote The Civil War: A Narrative. Ken Burns produced it for TV.

Tennessee Williams, of course. He wrote screenplays, so he may not count. But I think he was the most brilliant one of them all.

And William Faulkner's brother, John, wrote Dollar Cotton. I don't think anything has explained the Delta as well as did that book.
