Bleeding Heart Liberal might move to Gulfport/Biloxi (Jackson, Hattiesburg: fit in, new home) - Mississippi (MS) - City-Data Forum

Hey everyone! I have a question!

My mother and I both have been looking to relocate down south for years now. My uncle has moved to Gulfport recently and loves it! He is strongly urging us to move there. We will be taking a trip there in a few weeks and if like it, we may take him up on the offer to stay until we both get places to live. We are so over the crappy weather and rude attitudes up here.

About me: I am in my early 30's and am a bleeding heart from NY. I'm talking, an open-minded, free spirited, tattooed, sick sense of humor, gay rights, pro-life, new age Democrat. At the risk of sounding like a 14 year old about to start high school, am I going to fit in anywhere? I would be leaving an amazing and vast group of friends behind. I would hate to move to a new state and not be able to find some new cronies who have similar interests.

Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Why would you do that? Sounds like you're trolling.

When you move somewhere it's customary to assimilate. You won't make many friends as a self identified bleeding heart liberal. Why not move go New Orleans and visit on weekends?

Why would I do what? Move close to my family? Do I really have to answer that, or is common sense gonna kick in at some point? I have to ask myself who the troll really is here....

Where I'm from, it's customary to be yourself without fear of judgement and not be told to move an hour away and visit on weekends. But thank you for your input. Your 37 word answer spoke VOLUMES.

Not everybody in Mississippi is stuck in the 1950s. You are sure to find some like minded people like yourself. Good luck with your new home!

Because it seems like you're trying to illicit a reaction. Would you recommend I go to New York and scream "f*gs burn in hell" or something. Adapt to your surroundings.

It's rude to barge in somewhere and try to make waves. You might find a few folks like yourself who are young natives who haven't or can't move to NOLA or ATL for whatever reason. You guys will do lots of driving to NOLA on weekends.

No MS isn't stuck in the 50s, unless being a religious and conservative state means stuck in the 50s which is what liberals think. The coast is a bit more lax, but it's lax relative to Jackson not relative to Brooklyn. NOLA is your spot I mean that. You will be unhappy and will be severely out numbered ideologically. Even southern Dems are social conservatives, it's not like the north (I'm a northerner btw) the democratic party is de facto the black interests party in the south. Look for yourself, all the dem reps from the south in Congress are black and represent black majority districts besides Steve Cohen who is a white Jewish guy who represents Memphis. You will find that most democrats in the south outside of NOLA, Atlanta, and the Texas cities are religious, not supporters of gay marriage and just fiscally liberal (ie "gibmedat types")

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is very diverse and egalitarian. I don't think you'll have any problem fitting in. There is a large military base presence, as well as casinos, which both seem to attract plenty of people from other parts of the country who, among other things, have tattoos. I would describe the Coast atmosphere at live and let live. Besides Gulfport, you should look at Biloxi (see the streets right near the beach starting with "Saint..", with modest homes from the 1940s and 50s, giant live oaks draping over the wide streets, and sweet views of the gulf at each little neighborhood street intersection. Other modest affordable areas that seem to have that live and let live vibe...D'Iberville and Bay St Louis.

I agree with brick, and completely disagree with southsidegal. You never said you were planning on trying to change anyone, so come on down, and be yourself!

Contrary to the opinions of the media (both national TV and talk radio), Mississippi IS NOT a homogeneous mass of conservative white racists too busy oppressing the descendants of slaves to stumble into the 21st century.

And of all areas in the state, IMO the coast (or maybe Hattiesburg, just up Hwy 49) is the most welcoming of different viewpoints.

I will, however, point out an issue raised by your "crappy weather" statement. One problem with the southern coast is that it is oppressively hot and humid. Think of the worst heat wave you experienced up in NY; now imagine that wave lasting for over two months straight.
