My wife and I are planning to take a driving trip through the deep south, and I am wondering, from a custom standpoint, what I can expect if I drive over the speed limit in Mississippi?

In Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, I can feel pretty safe driving nine over the limit and not getting stopped. In Michigan there's even more leeway, up to 14 over.

What's it like in MS? Can I safely drive nine over? Or should I limit it to four over? Or maybe not even one over?

Nine over would probably be ok on the main highways, but personally I stick to less than that when visiting with my out-of-state tags.

Lots of little towns make a significant portion of their general revenue through speeding fines, though, so stick to four over in town. They know that you're just passing through and it would be too much trouble to fight a ticket in court, so it's easy money that doesn't come from the local taxpayers.

OP, why is it so important for you to break the law and endanger the lives of others?

Are you really proud of going 14MPH over the limit?

I don't 'fly commercial', anymore, and so drive between my properties, when I can't catch a ride on other people's planes. I've done plenty of Seattle-to-South-Carolina jaunts, and a couple of Orange County (CA) to Orange County (NY) trips, too, when I had foundations being poured in both regions. I get around just fine, without speeding. My cars last longer, and I get better mileage, too.

So, I have to wonder what you get out of it.

5 is ok in most areas, but I have seen some small towns here in the delta that will get you for even 1 over!

Oh, yeah. Speed limit is 70. No one minds if a car goes 84 around here!

The feeling will be, "Well, he has saved so much time, he has plenty of it to spare. He can use it going to the bank to make a withdrawal so he can continue on to the next county at 84MPH. Heck, he might even have time to buy a fine, Southern cooked meal. In every county."

Nah. Five over is plenty. No one will even look up.

Illinois is a very bad state to speed in. They keep the speed limit low so they can catch more speeders. I'd advise anybody traveling the interstate thru Illinois to watch your speed because they will ticket. I've heard it's due to all of that States liberal policies so the State of Illinois needs every stinking red cent of revenue they can their greedy little paws on.

Matter of fact, me and my family avoid Illinois on trips to Indiana from Texas because of the slower speed limit and greater chance of being pulled over for going 70 in a 65 mph zone.

My rule is 5 over the speed limit at most and I have never been ticketed for speeding and haven't even been pulled over since 1997.

"Senior member" seems to be an apt description for you.

In all seriousness, your redirection is out of scope for the thread, but thanks for weighing in anyway.

Sounds like bad luck. I've lived here 20 years and I've never been popped for speeding. Not by a cop, anyway.

Sounds like five over is the consensus.

Thanks, everyone!
