Brick gave a good review. We lived in the Hattiesburg area for 12 years before moving back up north for better jobs. One thing he did not mention is that Hattiesburg businesses and restaurants are mostly or practically all located on Hardy Street which goes from one end (downtown) to Canebrake which goes on to Columbia. The traffic congestion on this street is awful. Also Highway 49 is the other congested area but not as bad as Hardy Street. Hattiesburg is nice but no beach. We are going back to MS in two years when my husband retires and have found a luxury apartment in Biloxi which we consider a steal. Rents are very very reasonable in Biloxi compared to what we paid up north (1/2 the price) for a lot more space and of course, the beach. Why retire in Biloxi MS? We pay no state income tax on pensions or Social Security, cost of living is less even with sales tax on groceries. People are friendly and nice and there is no snow and ice to contend with.

Good review by Brick. What he didn't mention: We lived in the Hattiesburg area for 12 years. One of the things I hated about Hattiesburg was the traffic. All the businesses and restaurants are on two streets that cross each other. One is Hardy Street which is the most congested and the other is Highway 49 which isn't quite as bad. We are going back to Biloxi in two years when my husband retires for many reasons: can live in a luxury two bedroom apartment on/near the beach for 1/2 what we paid up north with more sq footage, beach across the street, no state income tax on pensions or Social Security, nice friendly people, warm weather but still there is Fall and a very mild winter (not like South Florida and hot year around).
