Moon444 hit the nail on the head and Vicksburg and Jackson. Vicksburg is the worst place I ever lived in my entire life. Jackson is so crime ridden that you have to dodge bullets to drive down the street. My husband's business has been hit with falling bullets on several occassions and the police just blow it off. On his way to work, he sees dead cats on the sides of the road where they were shot and thrown out into the street. It's a war zone. You are literally taking your life in your hands when you are in Jackson. On the way to work yesterday I heard a lady from Cincinnati, OH who called into the radio station. She just moved to Jackson 3 months ago and is scared out of her mind. She said that Jackson has more shootings in a single weekend than Cincinnati has in 3 months! If you value your life, stay away from Jackson. If you value your privacy and your property, stay away from Vicksburg. Tell it like it is Moon444.

Default Can't wait to move back

My in-laws have lived in Vicksburg for 35 years, in Hamilton Heights, never flooded. My husband grew up there, we were married in Cedar Grove. We live south of Phoenix, AZ, have for the past 6 years and now that he is done with his MBA, we can't wait to sell our house here and move back home. We want to move back because everyone knows everyone. We have lived in our house here for 3 years and have not met our next-door neighbors. Everyone here just pulls into their garage and shut themselves away. No one speaks or looks at each other here in Phoenix. I'd pick Vicksburg anyday!!

Default Vicksburg

If you let othrs tell you what to do you will not be happy.
Vicksburg has it's ups and downs as well as anywhere else.
alot of people are pretty much down home country and very easy going sometimes we get off track but everyone does in every city
I have lived here all my life I've been in the flood area's and out of the flood areas I lived in the worst neighborhoods to the best neighborhoods and I can tell you It's all in how you carry your own opinion about yourself that projects on others .
If you've been here then you know a fare amount about the feel of the city so noone has to tell you. The best thing to do is try it for a while if you do not like it consider a different location.

Well, there it is. A previous poster said they had lived in V'burg all their lives and couldn't wait to get back because everybody knows everybody. LOL!!! Talk about the good 'ol boy system... I've never heard it put so well. That's it in a nutshell. To make it in V'burg you need to have lived there all your life. I agree... go try it, and if you don't like it then move. Like we did. And you will too.

As for bike riding. People drive to Vicksburg from Jackson just to ride bikes in the NMP. Its 17 miles of peacful roads with slow moving traffic. Of course if you dont like hills its not good. You can also go about 10 miles east to the champion hilll area and have miles and miles of country roads to explore.
Check out Jackson Metro Cyclists on Yahoo groups.

Many people who work for the Army Corp of Engineers or ERDC in Vicksburg live in Clinton and commute (only around 30 minute one way commute). Clinton schools are good, and the city is practically crime free. Clinton is home to Mississippi College which is usually favorably ranked in USNews College report. We are also extremely convenient to the metro area in general. As far as cycling, Clinton is on the Natchez Trace which is wonderful for cycling not as hilly as the National Military Park in Vicksburg (which is also nice for cycling).

Default revitalize

I have a line on a piece of property a few blocks off the river in downtown. What are 2 bedroom condo prices and how are the restaurants in that area?

The casinos brought in so much crime that businesses and stores are leaving right and left. And the flooding! OMG... I can't tell you how many times homes were flooded out when the river would rise, especially the Halls Ferry area. Look at places in Northeast MS but stay away from the SW area. My parents live there and Katrina brought in so much crime it is unreal... home invasions, drugs, you name it. Katrina shook up all those folks in the bayous of LA and they all came to MS. What a mess.
Actually, a vast majority (abaout 150,000 or so) went to Houston TX, but i can understand how you feel there in Mississippi

Aggies07, I totally agree with you. The vast majority were shipped to Texas, especially Houston and San Antonio. Unfortunately, it was mostly "undesirables" you received - the good for nothing, low-down, robbing, raping, drug-dealing type. Hang in there.
