Yesterday, I was among thousands who traveled to Louisiana to buy Powerball and Mega Millions tickets. I'm sure thousands more drove to Arkansas or Tennessee to play since those two states also have a lottery. I can't help but to shake my head as to how our state legislature, for years, have said "no" to a lottery, and see how much of the state's money goes to these other states now.

Still a mystery to me why we can't have a lottery, but have casinos.

Wait... I thought Mississippi was anti-tax? Didn't you know that the Powerball is nothing more than a tax on people who don't understand math?

The odds say that jwkilgore is right. You probably have better odds at being struck by lightning twice than winning these things. But gamblers live in their own self made worlds. I used to live and work in Reno, and saw the carnage that gambling left behind. Gamblers will always tell you how much they won, and never even think of how much they lost.

Why would Nevada have a lottery? They already have the casinos, and any competition to them is expressively verboten by the terms of ownership they have over the politicians. The casinos say jump, the politicians say how far. What a state. Mob run government that gets it's revenue from gambling, drinking and prostitution....and legally!

I have a proposal to help with Mississippi's budget: create a new tax. Call it "Capitalist Security". It will be completely voluntary to pay it. If you do pay the tax, 90% of the payers will get nothing back. About 9.9% will get a small pittance back, much less than what was put into the tax. About 0.0999999% will get a large reward, but will still have to go back to work on Monday. The fortunate 0.0000001% will strike it rich and never have to work again.

It's nothing more than a wealth redistribution scheme from the many to the few, with the government taking a huge cut off the top.

Do you think Mississippians will agree to participate in this tax system?

Change the name from "Tax" to "Lottery" and they'll be lining up in gas stations all over the state, ready to pay up.

Don't forget to promise that the new lottery will create jobs and benefit schools!

And now that the Powerball is over a billion dollars, more Mississippi money will be leaving the state.

Slidell is 45 minutes away. We get a 20 advance-play Meg-Millions ticket every 10 weeks. Make a stop at Texas Roadhouse for dinner while we are at it (another thing not in MS).

Did make a special run for 5 PowerBall QP this time (just because). Did play them 2 times so I don't have to make a run for Wednesday. If no one hits, I might make another run Thursday if no one wins the jackpot. Will take Hwy. 90 though because the 10 has construction. Might also stop by the Mardi Gras store to pick up some fancy beads to dress the mailbox with.

As a side note to 'stupid tax' or 'poor tax', I will probably spend nearly $20 at Lee's Market in Biloxi getting BBQ pork and other foodstuffs I don't need.

As if people aren't getting their pockets cleaned out already by the casinos.
