We will be coming there next weekend and we have 4 days to check out the area for a place to live. We will rent for the first year, preferably a home but with our short notice will move into an apartment. We also have 2 children and will try to visit a school. ( 1 in middle, 1 in elementary ) I have started this thread because I am very overwhelmed and do not know where to start. Does anyone have any apartment/house recommendations in a good school zone? Here are a few I've found on the internet, Oakridge, Church Lake, Savannah Creek, southcrest and foxhaven. Is there anyone familiar with these places? I don't trust those websites that have reviews, like hotels they have people that work there put in positive comments. My husband seems interested in westwind townhomes in Horn Lake, are those nice? Last question, thanks for your patients, Do you know where to go first to find a house for rent?
I just need to make my 4 days there most productive. I thank you all in advance for any comments steering me towards a good start.

Thank you, MLH

I do not live in the Southaven area but have friends who do. I understand from them East Southaven is a good school - not certain which grades attend this school. Horn Lake has some great schools as well. I further understand most all schools in DeSoto county are top ranked in the state. Not much info but I hope this will get you started. Hopefully, someone more familiar will chime in soon to assist you better.

I live in CA now, but I grew up in Southaven. I have nieces who go to school there. Desoto county has some of the best schools in the state. All the schools are really good. It's not like some towns I've lived in where you want to live in a certain neighborhood so your kids can go to a good school. Southaven/Horn Lake are so close together they are almost one entity. I personally wouldn't recommend Horn Lake. My mom's next door neighbor is a Horn Lake police officer. He advised my brother not to move there. They do have a little higher crime in "certain" neighborhoods than Southaven. The area you're looking at might be fine. I don't know a whole lot about the rental situation there anymore. You might try the local paper DesotoTimes.com and the Commercial Appeal in Memphis has listings for Desoto county. I found the rental house I'm in now in CA through a real estate company so you might try that. Wish I could be more help. I know what it's like moving to a new town, and having no idea where to start. Good luck!

I am a Student at Ole Miss, so I live part time in Southaven. Out of the four cities I have lived in my life, Dunwoody Georgia (Affluent Suburb of Atlanta), Hickory Hill in Memphis (very scary stay away), Oxford, MS, (Nice College Town Love it Here). Southaven was my favorite. There are plenty of things to do in the town. Sports, Shopping, Movies, Bowling, ect, and it is less than fifteen minutes from Downtown, and Midtown Memphis (also the University of Memphis) Those were my favorite places to hang in High School. I went to private school in Memphis. Anyways got off on a huge tangent. My apologies. If I were you I would look into the Carriage Hills neighborhood for renting. It is in the oldest part of Southaven, and Southaven High School, Southaven Elementery School, Southaven City Hall, Southaven Police Department, The Public Library, and a Small Skatepark, and Carriage Hills Baptist church are all contained within it. It is an old neighborhood, but most of the houses are in good condition. I don't know about renting prices, but my house (one of the biggest in the neighborhood, about 3,000 square feet) was only about $200,000 three years ago. The area is majority caucasian, if that is an issue, The schools are the best in the State. "East Southaven High" which is really called "Desoto Central High School" is one of the top public schools in the State. DCHS gets a lot more credit than Southaven does, The Desoto Central School District, is in the most affluent part of the city, possibly even the state. Southaven is a good school though. Either school is majority White, with about an 80-20 split, which I prefer, not because I'm racist, but because when schools get above 50% black in Mississippi, all of the white students are put into private school, and the public school becomes almost completely black. A school being ethnically diverse is a very good thing. Also if you have any qualms about living in an area that is majority black African American, you will want to stay out of Apartments. I would pick a house in the Southaven school District, or an Apartment in Desoto Central district. Also, Stay away from Horn Lake, the area was nice, but is becoming increasingly more ghetto. In conclusion Try to find a house in carriage hills, you may even be able to afford to buy a house. We had a block party on my street last summer. So old school, and so amazing. anyways hope i helped you out. and good luck.

Hi! I live in Horn Lake and have lived here for most of my life.
I have children at the Elm, Middle, and High School. I LOVE them all!!

We jsut got word we will be relocated to UT and have been so upset of havign to leave this community.
Yes the closer to the state line you get the higher crime rate you have. We like to say if we could stop all MEmphis people at the line we would be crime free...lol

I live in the Apple Creek subdivision and we have a mix of older and younger families here. It is perfect!!
People say the DeSoto Central schools are nice but I know teachers that send their kids to Horn Lake.
I hope you found the perfect place to start out in in our area!! I really hope you stayed clear of Oakridge and WestWind.
