New York City has the nation's largest segregated school system. Nationwide, the percentage of black students in majority white schools is lower than it was in 1968. This isn't a problem exclusive to Mississippi.

Let's fix Mississippi's problems, but let's look a little deeper too.

I don't know; maybe you can look at Charleston and get a picture of the state.

I mean the point of the documentary was to show the last segregated prom. The last one. 2008.
Any segregation done these days is done by the participants themselves.

A lot of liberals like to equate any viewpoint that isn't a liberal one as being "backwards". The South is in general a conservative and Republican place, not to mention very religious and Baptist, so that leaves us open to be the part of the crowd that is still socially acceptable to snicker and point fingers at. So much for the liberals' open mindedness and tolerance.

I grew up minutes from Tallahatchie County... The Free State of Tallahatchie and Charleston. No, they are a different breed of cat over there. I am certain that many people there have a unique view on life.

Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, & West Va. consistently have the highest rate of obesity, smoking, diabetes, cancer...., and the lowest rates of exercising.... therefore the lowest average lifespans. They love deep-fried and greasy foods. Furthermore, the Texas Gulf Coast, Houston, the Baton Rouge area, and Kanawha Valley of West Va. are fully of polluting oil and chemical refineries.... On the opposite end are Hawaii, Colorado, Utah, Vermont full of health-conscious people pursuing healthy lifestyles.

Many southerners are fundamentalist Christians, meaning they believe the earth was created 6,000 years ago, global warming is a hoax, Obama was born in Kenya, and fluoridated water is a communist plot (I won't mention preachers handling rattlesnakes).

In all fairness, the low educational levels of Texas and California are undoubtedly due to them having an extremely high Hispanic immigrant population from areas like Central America. Then again, Texas ranks at or near the bottom in education spending per capita.

On the other hand, there are highly progressive and liberal areas in the south such as Raleigh-durham-chapel hill....Asheville - and anywhere with university campuses.
