In my contracting job travels Ive met several people from different parts of the south and a lot of them say they left because it's really "backwards".."people are backwards".."its a real backwards place", etc. I guess it is a broad term and it can mean many things but I interpreted it as code for "racist", dont know if thats accurate though.

Racist, conservative, uneducated, barbaric, etc are the stereotypes.

Stereotypes are there for a reason..

My interpretation would be that they mean the south is the most religious part of the country and thus conservative.

We see "backwards" all the time on the internet. It's just people repeating what they have heard or trying to insult a state they feel superior to.

Says more about the author than anything else.

I know a very nice man from Mississippi, the only Mississippian I've ever met. But he is a true gentleman who still stands up when a lady enters the room and he was a teacher before he retired so he is educated and I know he is also cultured. He goes back to Mississippi to see his brother and they go fishing together. He's never given a reason as to why he left but he left when he was a young man.

But that line I quoted is the stereotype many have of southerners. Maybe not barbaric, but uneducated or just plain dumb. And since they are uneducated, they are said to believe everything they hear whether it's on tv or wherever. That's a stereotype and a stereotype usually has a grain of truth to it. Just as there is a grain of truth to us New Englanders being cold and reserved, not in your face. You probably have other stereotypes about us (but I won't get into that here.)
