The counties containing Jackson, Meridian, and Hattiesburg, while puny in murderousness, compared to Saint Louis and New Orleans, still managed a robust showing in this piece by the St. Louis Post Dispatch. The 30 places in the U.S. where you're most likely to be murdered | News | stltoday.com

"Murderousness"? I'm sure it's a word. It must be. But it just sounds made up, like maybe it came from that terrible song "The Name Game" (Then you add Fee-Fi-and Mo), but I can't think of a single word that rhymes with "murderousness", so it's probably not from that song.

Anyway I was happy to see our fine state represented on yet another list. Seems like we make them all, top or bottom, but this time we landed in the middle and they had to use percentages to do that.

Fortunately, the list of dangerous counties coincides exactly with the list of places where I will not be watching sunset.

Thanks Gloria

Just choose whatever list you want to believe and be happy. According to this one Hattiesburg is one of the dozen safest cities in the state. Certainly the idea that the murder rate in either it or suburban Forrest County is one of the highest in the country is preposterous.

Certainly neither Hattiesburg nor Forrest County are dangerous places. Even though though Meridan is on the downslide, it's certainly not a place were one is overly worried about getting murdered. Outside of Jackson, Hinds County is not particularly dangerous either.

The whole notion of a place being dangerous based on a per rate is mundane. Their are a host of places that get listed dangerous or whatnot and they're safe.

Does anyone really care about this? The other day, I saw a bumper sticker that said "Keep Oregon Weird"...now there's the understatement of the year...you can add PA to that list too!
