We are coming to Southaven for a visit from Charlotte NC and I am getting different driving directions. Does anyone have an opinion as to which is the best way to come. The (northern) I-40 route through Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis - or the (southern) I-20/78 route through Atlanta, Birmingham, Tupelo etc.
They are both about the same distance and time according to mapquest. I was just wondering if there was someone familiar with both routes or had any suggestions. Thanks, MLH

I've been on parts of both routes but not all of either. I like I-40 through the Smokies and I like Knoxville and Nashville, but I find it boring between Nashville and Memphis. I actually like driving through Atlanta, but if you're not used to it, it may not be for you. I-20 has some nice areas, especially Atlanta to Birmingham. I'm unfamiliar with 78 (which I believe at some point in the future will be designated I-22).

Personally, if they are about the same distance, I'd take one route to get there and the other one to get back. I do that when traveling to most places, if I can and if time and distance allows it. That way you usually aren't disappointed and there's always something new to see. It keeps you awake as well.

Happy Travels.

If I were you, I would drive out using one route and drive back using the other. That way you get to see twice as much.

I prefer the I-40 route. While the trip between Nashville and Memphis is boring, the trip between Birmingham and Memphis on US 78 is more boring (and slower.) Unless you want to stop in Atlanta and do some sightseeing, I'd avoid I-285 at all costs (unless you travel in the middle of the night.) Drive safely.

darylwi,
Traffic in Atlanta can be absolutely terrible at rush hour (4:00-7:00). If you drive thru here, just avoid that time. Same in a.m.--7:00-9:30 a.m.

I travel from Charlotte to Ms. not quite the destination as you, but I go straight through Atlanta. I try to leave early enough that I hit Atlanta before 3:30 PM. and usually I don't have any problems. Traffic always seems heavier on Friday's and of course, around holidays. Message me if you have any additional questions.

I have family in Greensboro and have been both ways. My pick is the southern route if you time Atlanta for non rush hour. The Birmingham to Memphis trek on 78 is much improved with the 4 laning.
