I have been reading a lot of blogs. I understand that according to some surveys MS comes in last for everything. I have lived in California, Arizona, New Hampshire, New York, FL and Mississippi. I have never really been bored in any of these states. I realize each state has different things to offer. New Hampshire and upstate NY have the best skiing, snowshoeing,, and hiking. Arizona the best hills, California, where I lived was a desert and mostly wealthy people, I personally never liked it but, I was never bored, just did not care for the atmosphere. MS by far has some of the nicest people I can say that I have ever ran across. Of course they are on the bottom for many things and I lived on the coast prior to casinos when not much was going on and jobs were hard to come by. I must say that in the North country of New York and New Hampshire same thing. I enjoy rural living because I have mostly always lived in small towns in most of these states. I have been to cities as well including Boston, Ny, LA, Miami.
It seems that some people need something to constantly entertain them. I personally enjoy books, gardening, art, visiting with friends, strolls around town, simple things. I think regardless of where you live if you are able to entertain yourself with simple things you will find happieness within yourself. I grew up with a lot of music and books so it really does not matter if I am in Memphis, TN, Waveland, MS or New York city my needs for the most part are pretty simple. I really hate box type super stores, malls. I enjoy freindly people, libraries, small art exhibits, or large, unique things. In MS I have been able to find quality libraries, actually better than some in New York or NH.
I am wondering are there others who feel that fun must come from malls, nightclubs, etc. Has the rest of the world found that rural living is going by the way side because people in general cannot entertain themselves and require something new everyday in order to truly be happy. Sure, I am not saying there are some things in the state of MS that could be improved but, I think if you went to any state in the nation you would find that. As a whole is MS really boring or is it that people have just become to used to being entertained and are unable to entertain themselves? I think because historically MS is rural and most people come from backgrounds that are not priveleged they tend to be ok with sitting on the porch viisiting with friends, reading, fishing in a creek, finding good in simple things and that is part of the beauty of MS and many southern states and other rural states, you are layed back and have time to find fun in simple things. I personally kind of enjoy that, if not I would live in Boston or New York, which by the way is enjoyable at times but, overall, I enjoy simple living so, I guess MS is not that bad for someone who likes to create their own fun on their own terms.

Thumbs up I think you've hit the head on the nail!

Boring, boring, boring is what I hear a lot of folks yakking when they cannot find something to do, when they cannot find something to entertain them, as if it's willed that they should be entertained 24/7 by their neighbors, or the town they live in, or the state. Hey, I get bored, too, but I don't whine about it much. I can find things that need to be done, laid-by things to be completed (why not now?), or just chill out, sleep it off.

Just wanted to pop in, give you a rep. I've got a head cold from hell, and while feeling better, I'm still under the weather, so I'll not tarry long. Good post, I like it!

Having lived in the "big city" for several years and having enjoyed it, I think you are correct. If I were to go back to the big town my everyday life would be going to work, taking care of family, having lunch with interesting people, visiting a museum or library, working out, seeing a good film, taking a class, spending an afternoon in the park or on the golf course, having a beer in the local Irish pub and occasionally going to the beach or mountains.
The only one of those things I can't do in MS is the mountains--and that kills me--I love the mountains! But the golf is a whole lot cheaper!

that is true, glad to see there are others who work and do not need a great deal to find or cure "boredom" a word that I truly never have experienced. Maybe things are not great but "bored"? cannot fathom so much of that.

I think sometimes people go overboard when categorizing something. Instead of saying something is boring, thus making a definitive statement, they should really be saying that it bores THEM. There is a huge difference.

I live in a metropolitan area of more than 5 million people. There are a ton of restaurants of different types to choose from. There are a huge amount of different kinds of things to look at and enjoy. There are more things going on than one person could possibly be involved in.

If I moved to a small town I'm sure there would be things I would miss. I've thought about living in a smaller place. I'm retired now and can live anywhere I want. I do love stimulation. I cannot deny that. However, if I were living in a small town and met enough people who I enjoyed the company of, I really doubt that I would be bored.

I really don't think the people of Mississippi should feel defensive about living there. I've driven through it and I think it is a pretty state. I think the people are for the most part pleasant, down to earth people. So I say, enjoy it and don't worry about what others think of it.

All the people coming to mississippi complaining about being bored i guess i can understand. But if you are an outdoorsmen and like to actually do stuff in the outdoors i really dont understand how you can be bored. You can hunt some type of animal from Sept 1 until May 1 you will have to hunt alot of different things but hell thats what i do and i wouldnt dream of doing anything else. Then you have fishing i have no idea how many lakes there are but there is not a shortage of them. Fishing is all year round. For the non hunter/fisherman you could probably play golf all year round and tennis with our mild climate. There are tennis leagues in most towns in the state. There are more than enough land for the hiking type, i mean hell delta national forrest has around 40 something thousand acres.

Yes I would agree that people in general are very friendly in MS... And also agree that people, even myself should say things are boring to my spouse and me instead of just boring... Good point! We are pretty high-strung and my spouse grew up in the city and has a very hard time dealing with living here, but I think in part its due to no family and fewer friends!

Some people will be bored regardless of where they live, other people will not.

I have had periods of boredom since I got disabled but it has nothing to do with the state I live in. Far as I can tell, Ms has it all but I just am not able to do what I always would like to do.
I had to give up traditional flower gardening like I use to do and make do with some potted plants on my patio...just this year tried it.
I think too many ppl feel others or "something" should entertain them rather than them search for entertainment or something to busy their hands.
We didnt have computers or game consoles when we were growing up nor were we allowed control of the tv except for one hour on saturday mornings.
We fast learned at early age not to say we were bored or eeks mom would find us something to occupy our lazy time.
We had to use our imagination in those days..make doll furniture out of matchboxes and oatmeal boxes. These kids now..pfft they don't use their imaginations at all. I am worried about future writers..if anyone will have the imagination of Kootnz or Mr King. Maybe they will be like film industry and do bunches of remakes of classics for lack of imagination.
I guess if I liked drinking or hobnobbing then it may be more difficult. I prefer backyard bbq or even just a dog and fries at kids ballgame...so thats just me in that I am lucky I am a plain jane lifestyle. Heck, I couldnt afford to have fun in big cities anyway lol. 17yrs ago in the suburb of chicago we lived in, our taxes on a 3 bedroom ranch was 2k a year..here they are 187.00 yr for a 3 bedroom..difference too is this is 12 acres..Illinois was 1/4 acre. No way could I afford any of that on disability.

I am in the midsouth and having a ball. I lived in Chicago for many many years and once I left I never looked back. There are so many new venues that have been built in the Southaven, Olive Branch and Horn Lake areas: restaurants, movies, shopping centers, concert venues, neighborhood festivals, etc. I LOVE IT!!! It's definitely the person because I never had this much fun in Chicago. Several of my family members from Chicago will be moving here next year. We are middle class professionals who love positive people and to have a great time!
