Hi Mississippi friends,

My brother and I, who are each on our late 30s, are taking a long weekend getaway in mid-April. Some of our criteria included nice weather (were from NJ and it's currently snowing), great food, and possibly a place for a nighttime drink. Would someone be able to recommend where we should go/what to do?

Thanks so much advance,
Jeremy

April 14th is opening weekend at Autozone Park in Memphis, if you like baseball games. 'Course, that's Memphis, which is not quite in Mississippi.

That same weekend is opening weekend in Biloxi - they have a beautiful new stadium in a great location. If you like casinos, there is one close by, but there are plenty of other places to stay to enjoy the beach.

May 4th is the beginning of Blue Suede Cruise in Tupelo, if you like custom cars and hot rods and stuff.

We like Bay St Louis. Beaches are not great, but it's a great little town.

Well.....since the topic is out there.....I'm looking for a weekend getaway myself. Did NOLA last year because I had a work conference in Bay St. Louis. Anywhere else down there worth going? I think we might go spend more time in BSL actually, I like that little downtown area.

Yes! Natchez has MORE than enough for a very satisfying and interesting long weekend - maybe even a whole week. It's very pleasant, and the natives are lovely people.

Longwood Mansion and its history, would be enough. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longwo...z,_Mississippi) But there's more history and architecture in Natchez, than you could get around to, in a whole MONTH. The town is gorgeous, occupying a high bluff overlooking the Mississippi. The topography is formed from deep deposits of alluvial soil, brought down by the Mississippi, from as far North as Canada. The incredibly deep loam means that the greenery is lush and beautiful.

And NOW, you can (finally!!!!) take the Natchez Trace Parkway all the way into Natchez.

There's a sizeable community of Uptown New Orleans folk, who settled there, following Katrina. And there have been Hollywood people buying and restoring houses there (this one looked better, when George Hamilton had it painted a muted purple: https://www.flickr.com/photos/dazon_blue/4645992604), for a generation or two (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2xH_DwK_pU). This, in addition to the remaining members of old Natchez families, and various trust fund babies (http://www.oldhouses.com/4017) and divorcees from elsewhere (playing house in historic homes, while attempting to live out their lives, on tiny trust funds or divorce settlements, of less than ten million) means you'll be rubbing shoulders with a crowd far more interesting than you'd find in most small Deep South towns.

There are plenty of nice places to eat (http://www.pearlstreetpasta.net/dinner.html), a choice of gyms, and an array of bars (from Hip Hop, to places to pick up a hot Louisiana Redneck with a big...um...truck, to the Key-West-Hemingwayesque-literary sort of watering hole). There's an array of accommodations, including SEVERAL HISTORIC MANSIONS. The Eola, Downtown, seems to be closed. But it has a sumptuous grand-hotel-type lobby, nice dining rooms, a nice courtyard, and (surely) a bar of some sort.

But with Dunleith as an option (and truly, I could have a great weekend there, without ever leaving the grounds), why look any farther? Dunleith Historic Inn | Natchez, MS

That's a good idea, I have never been on the Natchez Trace south of Ridgeland. I have been to Natchez a handful of times, but I wasn't really looking around or anything.
