Ocean Springs would be one number by a long shot. Others to consider are Oxford, BSL, Vicksburg, Starkville, Canton and Hernando (possibly Gulfport and Brandon?).

Many of our cities that are happening (Madison, Flowood, Tupelo) aren't centered around a downtown.

In addition to those mentioned, Bay St Louis, Fondren (technically not a downtown), Tupelo, Corinth, New Albany, Brookhaven, Laurel, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, and Columbus are worth mentioning.

Among these Bay St Louis wins for atmosphere and setting, overlooking the bay with its marina, beach, and charming waterside restaurants. Fondren wins for dynamism, with its perfect location surrounded by huge hospitals, the medical school and numerous colleges amid Jackson's rolling terrain and ultra-cozy Belhaven and Woodland Hills neighborhoods.

Tupelo wins for cleanliness and modernity, evoking an undeniable feeling of safety and prosperity. As small town downtowns go, Brookhaven and Corinth have a classic feel. I was told once that Brookhaven never lost its downtown to begin with, and Corinth is making a very nice comeback. Both of these towns are loaded with historic homes just blocks from downtown.

Laurel's downtown until recently paled in comparison to Laurel's remarkably elegant historic residential district just a couple of blocks away. But since the advent of the popular home renovations show set in Laurel, things seem to be well on the upswing with new locally based hardware stores, bakeries and restaurants. Laurel has a solid argument for being Mississippi's best place to live, with its fast-rising downtown, picture perfect residential areas, and easy proximity to Florida, New Orleans and the Miss Gulf Coast; convenience to Hattiesburg and Jackson, and proximity to the south's main large cities (Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham).

Downtown Gulfport continues to rise, most recently with the new Mississippi Aquarium under construction, festive Jones Park, marina, historic buildings and landscaped boulevard through the center. And lastly, as small towns go, New Albany is a very nice, top contender. Although quite small, New Albany has a completely renovated downtown Main Street (in time for the Toyota plant perhaps), some great historic homes, several very upscale newer neighborhoods, and with hardly any run-down areas to be found.

While Oxford, Starkville, and Biloxi/Ocean Springs are probably the most obvious choices thanks to college athletics, college town charm, casinos, and scenic coastline, (and obviously Natchez with its breathtaking architecture and river views), I do find that Mississippi with its combination of bucolic scenery of farms and gently rolling woodlands - combined with uber-authentic small towns and endearingly cordial and diverse populations - connects directly with the heart not quite like anywhere else.

ARE YOU INSANE? Gulfport downtown is BUSTED...it's mostly shutdown anyway. It has ZERO to offer. what a miserable place. Anyone that has been knows that Gulfport would NEVER make the list. Heck, Pascagoula looks a bit more promising with its downtown than Gulfport.

That's why it is in parentheses with a question mark. I've haven't spent much time there (minus Katrina) since the late 90s, other than eating at the Half Shell and whatever the other restaurant is that is in close proximity. I'm assuming this is the area that Gulfport considers downtown?
