My family may need to relocate. We are looking for the best public schools before looking for housing. Can anyone recommend good schools in the Gulfport area?

As with any public schools you will always have positive and negative comments, but from personal experiences I believe the Bayou View Elem/ Junior High;Anniston Avenue Elem. Gulfport High Schools to be better than the other. My brother and I attended different High Schools (14 yr age difference) I graduated from Gulfport High and had such a wonderful experience that my husband and I based buying our home around our kids going to that school. My brother went to Harrison Central High and it was horrible!! He said the fights were so bad you couldnt focus on your work!! He dropped out and got his GED

Good Luck

Janbee, If you're looking for public schools near Gulfport, do consider moving to Long Beach. Here's the school district website:http://www.lbsd.k12.ms.us/ (broken link).

I have lived in Long Beach since 1989, raised two children here and was extremely active in the schools. The Long Beach School District is heavily invested in the growth and education of their children and has a level 5 rating - the highest available in the state. Having participated in their 5 year action plan task force several years back, on the Curriculum and Standards Committee, I know we are implementing that plan because my daughter is still in our schools. I have seen much of what we recommended be established, and am confident that the rest will be added on schedule. I know there are other level 5 public school districts on the Gulf Coast, but I am most familiar with Long Beach.

Good luck with your relocation planning!

Central Elementry is a great school.. the staff and Teachers there are awesome.. I am very pleased with it. The Central Middle school is ok.. I am a tad worried that they have 2 Gulfport Police staffed there fill time... but the school its self is very nice. The people seems a bit tightwadish to me though.. so I am not as pleased with it.. but the schools are good here.. the Casino Dollars make sure of that.

I also agree that Long Beach has some of the best public schools. Elementary, Middle and High School. Long Beach is also known for highest tax rates, but there are alot of family friendly subdivisions. Since the Hurricane there were quite a few schools that were destroyed. There are plans to build a new school in Long Beach. My children attend a Harrison County Public School, it is West Wortham Elementary-Middle School it is grades K-8. I feel like West Wortham is a excellent school and is located in a country setting, we have alot of new growth going on in our area around the school. Right now my children would have to attend Harrison Central 9th grade and Harrison Central High School which both have bad reputations for fights and problems. There are currently plans to build a new High School though, so I can only hope with that will come a higher level of academics and that some of the problems will be solved.

My husband is in the navy and we are transfering to Gulf Port Ms. for 2yrs. Its very scary from the negative comments we have heard about kids bringing guns to schools and being rob. We will be on he base but we also will have a life outside the base. I am looking for top schools in Gulf Port in grades from 3rd, 5th, 8th, and 10th. I may have to put them in private or a acadmey schools. I am very worried.... TeeBabs...

teebabs,
I have a niece that is now a senior at harrison central,
They have police that walk the campus.
-now before you think "is it that bad... when I lived in san diego, the Jr. high I went to had Police walking around also, and we had to have ID badges.
It's like everywhere else, you have good and bad, all you can hope is your kids will hang with the good kids and stay away from bad.
