A good chance we are moving to Meridian. I do not want to buy a home as we probably won't be there more than a couple of years. I have looked at listing and can't find anything that seems updated unless you spend 2k a month. Is there particular parts of town to look in. How do you find rentals because Zillow shows little.

I have read older posts about the crime and to stay away, but if the job sends you, you have to go. Please tell me something good about living here.

Decent rentals will be pretty high. I would suggest getting on Dave Ramsey’s website and getting one of his endorsed realtors. You probably won’t hear anything but negativity here.

There are certainly much worse places than Meridian (locals call it Murderidian), but it's not great either. You can easily avoid the trouble spots.

I'm assuming you are associated with the Naval Base? If so that is north of town, I'd look up that way. Definitely, do not buy, rent. Whatever you rent, do it in person, you need to get a grounds-eye view of the place.

I travel to Meridian several times per year and never feel unsafe.

Good idea to call a local realtor in Meridian. Some of the positives for Meridian are:

- Riley Center downtown hosts excellent musical acts in the former opera house, and there is a new museum downtown called the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience. The downtown for a town this size is huge, with many blocks of historic brick buildings gradually being redone after having been largely abandoned for decades. They are only just getting started but the potential is remarkable. Mississippi State University has a branch in downtown Meridian.

- The terrain in and around Meridian is quite hilly and wooded, so there are many options for a home with a picturesque, sloping, deeply wooded back yard. The nicest neighborhoods are mostly in the northeast quadrant of the city, roughy in the vicinity of Northwood and Briarwood Country Clubs. The nicer, older homes start just north of Meridian high school, east of Poplar Springs road. In the Collinsville area, there are many homes on huge wooded lots (over 5 acres) backing up to lakes and wooded ravines. These kinds of spreads can be found all around the city actually.

- If you need public schools, there are several that are ranked in the top 20 in the state (West Lauderdale, Enterprise, Clarkdale).

- The hospitals in Meridian are quite large, with a sizable medical community in the area.

- Meridian is about 3.5 to 4 hours to Florida beaches and 3.5 hours to New Orleans, 4.5 hours to Atlanta and Nashville, and 1.5 hours each to Jackson and to Starkville (and Tuscaloosa) for college athletics.

- Meridian has some really nice parks in the city (Bonita Lakes), and some great kayaking along the Chunky River just outside town.

- Casinos and highly rated golf (Dancing Rabbit) are just 40 miles away in Philadelphia and Choctaw, MS.

Thank you for your replies. I am used to moving and can adapt, but looking at realtors and Zillow it looks like slim pickin' for the rental market. I have called a realtor and looked at Craigslist. One house on Zillow rental we thought was contender ended up this week for sell as a foreclosure.

Again, thanks for the responses.

Marion has some duplexes that were nice 10 years ago, not sure about now but Marion is pretty safe. It's a small town and Marion police and sheriffs are constantly posted along the main street. Dalewood is option too but a little further out (about 15 miles from the city). Its a gated lake community with about $700/yr hoa fees. The prices can be higher than normal because of the vacinity to NAS. Still i would say it's worth checking out.
