Really looking forward to my trip - I picked Columbus as my "home base" mainly because of Tennessee Williams (my all time favorite playwright) - I want to see his birthplace. I'm planning day trips to Oxford and possibly to Tuscumbia, AL to see Helen Keller's birthplace. Do you have any other recommendations for me?

Thanks guys!

The Windsor Ruins are worth seeing altho, they are about 4.5 hours from your home base.

I just Googled the Ruins - they're beautiful! That is a little bit further than I'd like to travel for a day trip, though.

Would anyone recommend the Eudora Welty House in Jackson?

My wife and I enjoy the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge south of Starkville. 99 percent of the time we see an alligator or two sunning themselves, and it's good for bird watching. There are trails and picnic areas too. While in Starkville visit the Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library, the campus of Mississippi State University, and if you like jambalaya and other cajun flavors eat at Oby's.

If you decide to go to Jackson, we enjoyed the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, and the Old Capitol Museum. We haven't made it to Mynelle Gardens but it looks pretty, and would like to visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum. The Natchez Trace is nice too, and I would recommend getting on it at Mathiston and going to Jackson.

I second the Helen Keller birthplace.
If you are interested in Blues music, take a trip to Clarksdale. It will expose you to the delta region. If you enjoy riding and looking, take MS Hwy 1 along the river - especially north of Vicksburg. The small towns along the river are dying, for the most part. For me, that's part of the scenery. Ride with your window down. The locals will casually wave.

History? Natchez. Natchez was once the second wealthiest city in America, after New York. The mansions - dozens of them - are still there; it was never burned during The Civil War.
Elvis bought his first guitar at Tupelo Hardware. If you go in, ask for Connie; she'll show you the spot and tell you the story.

If in Tupelo, don't forget Elvis's birth home, museum, and chapel.

If you want a good southern style plate lunch, the Veranda in Starkville is good.
