Hello, me, my wife and two-year old are moving to Vicksburg in June, I am curious on walkability to parks, outdoor recreation and a decent neighborhood, i.e. - generally free of riffraff.

The military park is huge and nice, I don't know if there are any other well-maintained parks. I drove through recently to a site visit and saw a nice part of Drummond St with a home for sale (and possibly rent), however, it was spotty at best. There seemed to be two sections of Drummond that were night and day separated by some gritty commercial section. The nice section appeared to be distanced a good bit from the street. In fact, as I drive around the city, neighborhoods kind of mesh together. I don't know if it's safe for my wife and child during the day. I have heard from my new office "watch your back", "maintain situational awareness" and the likes. Also heard that ... "80% live in such and such apartment".

The wife doesn't like the idea of living in an apartment, but there are a few there that are appealing with amenities, although home rental market appears tight. My wife and child do not like to stay inside, they like parks, going outside, enjoying the sunshine..etc. an inordinate amount of time spent indoors and they are both bouncing off the walls. Are there any specific neighborhoods to consider?

There is decent neighborhood off Culkin Road, where many professionals live. If you plan to be there until your daughter obtains school age or you want to make money on a house, buy in Madison and make the drive over for work, many people do this.
