how will this help in any meaningful amount? the best way to cut overall education costs is cut out all the gravy administration costs at all levels of education. There is no reason why a district/college needs so many administration personnel.

Can't find anything on the Community, or Junior college cost, but there is plenty about the huge cost of college athletics in general. And that cost shows up in tuition.

I have no doubt, though, that the huge cost of high school athletic programs could be reduced to a mere fraction of what it is now. Personally, I would like to see almost all high school athletic programs scrapped. That is not why kids go to school - or at least it is not supposed to be the reason.

Atheletics, band, art, and other extra curricular activities should be encouraged, not discouraged especially in k-12.


But they specifically said at the junior college level. I would like to know the logic behind it. Why cut something that brings in money, instead cut out the tenured positions and administrators that do nothing but draw a paycheck and while their numerous staff does all the work.

For JuCo football, there are few boosters, and not many fans paying admission, so I doubt football (which is the most expensive sport by far) is in any way self-supporting. In the SEC, football makes money and draws students, but JuCo football doesn't draw students. EMCC is by far the most dominate JuCo program in the country, had it's own Netflix Series (Last Chance U) in 2015-2016 and has won five national championships since 2011, enrollment at EMCC was down 6% in 2016.

This wouldn't save a ton of money, but for the poorest State in the nation, every little bit helps. Plus I rather see JuCo's focus on a core mission of trade schools and dual enrollment/credit for high school juniors and seniors.

Why?
We are churning out kids who don't read well and who know nearly nothing of science and history. Clearly, the adult's fascination with sports has not helped the kids. My relative will teach archery next year at a school that is ranked 139th out of 234 high schools.

Those programs provide opportunities for students, which is what JUCO is all about. So for a situation that "wouldn't save a ton of money", I say go after bigger items. Not everything is defined by a dollar amount. It's an investment in our young people.

JUCOs and JUCO sports is one of the few things Mississippi has gotten right. I didn't notice this on your list earlier when I agree with it. If something needs to change, it's the number of out-of-state players they bring in, only to export them back out to out-of-state schools.

I have no clue about the cost or funding sources for Mississippi JUCO sports programs, so I will stay out of that part of the debate.

However, JUCOs in Mississippi have long been the best bang-for-buck college education options for Mississippians, as they allow students to get their prerequisites for degrees at a much lower cost than the major universities in the state.

For example, I checked on East Mississippi Community College's tuition and it is $155 per credit hour for the 2019-2020 school year. By comparison, Mississippi State's tuition is $356 per credit hour for the 2019-2020 school year. JUCOs are bargains for people who don't have a lot of money (i.e. most Mississippians) and who don't want to incur a huge amount of student loan debt when working towards a degree.
