What are some of the cheapest more decent areas. Hoping to find a 3 bedroom but don't know what average rent is so if anyone can chime in id appreciate it. Would like to rent a house over an apartment but would like price range for both. We are moving from Virginia soon and have chosen Mississippi. Any advice on securing a place prior to moving since its roughly a 10 plus hour drive each way. Would rather not have a city setting and hopefully more of a country setting with some woods. Also how is the jobs out there? Is there a lot of unemployment or should it be relatively easy to secure a job in a short time. I have roughly 10k for the move which should get us on our feet.

What type of job? Do you have an 'area' that is somewhat defined? Most anything will probably be cheaper coming from Virginia.

Any type of job. I'm originally from NY and had a home paid off along with all debt I had but the state itself bleeds you dry. Moved to VA for some family and now they are good we want to find a final place to settle so me and the wife decided mmississippi.not sure what you mean by area that is defined but we definitely don't want city life. I grew up in the sticks as its called back home so would love some wooded areas to ride an atv around and do some camping or bonfires. We aren't picky just would prefer a place with some space between homes.

Also stupid question but are there gators in Mississippi lol.

yep, gators in MS - also some as far north as TN

Unemployment in MS is 13th highest.

You could find farm jobs out of the city - or possibly Tunica if it picks back up for gambling, food service.

We are up north in TN where the unemployment situation is slightly better and there's a large variety of jobs. Taxes are slightly higher but there is no income tax, fewer gators.

Lots of snakes in both states, turtles, and get used to eating fish that can walk on land - aka catfish. Yes, they really can walk on land.

Trucking is a good job in both states, US 45 runs from MS all the way to the northern border, somewhere in Michigan.

Airports - none that I'm aware of in MS, but TN has 4 commercial airports. In the past, airports were a good source of jobs.

There is, I think, a car manufacturer in MS - not sure. There's at least 1 in TN.

Jobs in either state - unless you have a skill, you'll either be in food service or retail. And pay - way less than what you're used to either in NY or VA. The cost of living is a lot lower than NY in some ways but when we moved here (from NYC), I found our food budget doubled per month. There's just no competition. And, if you're out of a city (in the county), there's little to no food delivery, no pharmacy delivery (for Rx), and you might not even have a regional hospital. We had one until 5 years ago - 34 bed facility - that was shut down by the state - as the state has shut down quite a large number of the smaller regional/local hospitals. Doctors - unless you're in a big city, your medical care is by nurse practitioner. I happen to like my NP and am very happy with her, but for anything outside general care, it's off to the city to a specialist. I think there's 1 place in my area that even has an x-ray machine but I wouldn't go there again if you paid me. So, compared to upstate NY, it's close but sometimes it feels like we're living in North Dakota or Alaska.

Good luck with your job search which I hope you figure that out before moving here.
