Going to the gulf around the end of December for about a week. I have stayed in the panhandle and galveston before but wanted to check out something new.

Totally unfamiliar with that area but looks promising on vrbo but open to using other sites as well.

Particulars:
1) Will stay at a place on the beach or maybe across the street from the beach.
2) Will be right around the end of the year so cooler but that's ok but wondering if there is decent beach or pier fishing to be found?
3) Don't need any fancy nightlife but some proximity to places where we could mini-golf or get breakfast etc. mainly this is going to be a relaxing beach stay with fishing and beach combing.
4) Have they been closing beaches around there? Or would that only be public beaches etc.

Appreciate any and all suggestions.

Book a stay at the Beau Rivage. Don't worry about beaches being closed. Generally speaking fishing off the MS Coast is not good, probably even worse in the winter.

I personally like driving along the coast and exploring such towns as Bay St. Louis, Ocean Springs, Port Christian, and Pascagoula (birthplace of Jimmy Buffet). For a more laid-back and chill stay, I recommend 'The Roost' hotel in Ocean Springs.

Math, you may want to take a look at Bay St Louis. You'll love the town. The restaurants are good, and while the water is browner than you might like the beaches are abandoned, for the most part.
After school the kids fish off the pier in town.
Bay St Louis has a lot of fans.
Bay Town Inn is far and away our favorite place to stay.

yes, yes, no, the beau is a very good place to stay, any of them, but nearly all the hotels are very new on hwy 90, so if you want to get away from the casino, there are many, also across the road from the beau is the minor league baseball stadium, so take in a ball game too. there some island off the coast that has boat trips, there also a civil war fort on the island, they leave from the beau area too. seabee base in gulfport has a great musemn open to the public

Legacy Towers in Gulfport. Units on the end and on the top floor have incredible views up and down the coastline.

White House hotel in Biloxi for old-world coastal elegance. Also, Grand Centennial and Oasis in Gulfport for historic building and lush grounds with giant oaks and the Almanett Hotel for a more historic feel.

Air B and B places would be a great choice in downtown Ocean Springs historic district, historic Pass Christian and downtown Bay St. Louis, plus Bay Town Inn noted above in Bay St Louis and Hotel Whiskey and elegant Pass Marianne condos in Pass Christian.

Biloxi has many modern hotels such as brand-new Hilton Garden Inn (and numerous others) and cool casino hotels such as Beau Rivage noted above.

My favorite beaches are Bay St. Louis and Waveland, because of the quaint small-town atmosphere. Pass Christian has possibly the prettiest beaches (sugar white and wide), uncrowded and in view of historic homes and charming downtown area and marina. Gulfport's beaches are next to a highway but Jones Park downtown with marina and aquarium is a neat area. Biloxi beaches are the most fun (although not in winter obviously) and Ocean Springs has the cutest beach front that serves as a great place for the community and for families to walk, play volleyball, and fish.

Of course the true, picturesque Gulf of Mexico beaches are out on Cat Island, Horn Island and Ship Island, so in winter you would need to charter a boat to get out there.

For historic small towns, Ocean Springs, Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis are unbeatable. For excitement, restaurants, shows, etc...Biloxi. For culture, Gulfport has a cool downtown area with a beautiful park, marina, and the new Aquarium.

Also, the two big bridges (Biloxi-Ocean Springs and Pass Christian-Bay St Louis) are gorgeous places to walk at dusk.

I've recently stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Biloxi and it is nice, plus it is across the street from McElroys and The Hard Rock. Also, there is some type of new tourist development next door (Legends?).

Appreciate all the feed-back.

I got the place taken care of now and it's more off the beaten path.

Already plan on going to Mobile to see the Korean Memorial\USS Alabama. Probably will swing by the hard rock section of town too.

I see a lot of good restaurants in the area, moderately priced seafood recommendations appreciated. There looks to be a rustic place just a few blocks east of the USS ALabama.

Also, any good breakfast places? I see there is a Waffle House in the area....just kidding...I went into one once and it was like out of a comedy sketch it was so bad. (The guy airing out his freshly amputated leg stump was surprising but the doc did a nice job with the stitches.)

For breakfast in Biloxi, Fill-up with Billups. It's across the street from the Beau.

For seafood we like The Reef, Shaggy's, Steve's Marina, Half Shell Oyster House, and although it's in a remote location, Taranto's.

We used to stop at McElroy's Harbor House for breakfast, they have good beignets but they stopped serving breakfast. The McElroy's across the bridge at Ocean Springs still serves breakfast but doesn't have the same atmosphere.
