Hi! I'm trying to narrow down my list of possible future living places. Honest appraisals of Ocean Springs would be appreciated.

Do you need a car to live there? Is it relatively safe? Is there any nature scene? I love the heat/humidity, so that's not a factor. Any and all info is welcomed -- whatever you can think of.

Thanks! -- John

1. Hurricanes
2. Because of No. 1, homeowners Insurance is very expensive if you live South of I-10.
3. The downtown area is walkable, however if you need to see a doctor, it will be a long walk.

Do you need a car to live there? Depending on your expectations, almost everyone in MS has a car, most things are spaced out.

Is it relatively safe? Yes, except for severe weather. If you don't have a car, this situation is further complicated.

Is there any nature scene? Yes, you are on the coast. Sandy beaches, but the poor water quality keeps most people out of the water. Plenty of nature in MS to discover....if you have a car...

I love the heat/humidity, so that's not a factor. Any and all info is welcomed -- whatever you can think of. If you don't have a car due to financial concerns, OS, and BSL are some the highest cost of living areas in the state. Although, the cost of living is still low compared to many other parts of the country. In most places in MS, you will need a car if you want much independence (shopping, doctors, etc.) Most towns in the 'Sip are set up so that one has to drive. Public transportation is in short supply, Uber/Lyft are available in many areas though.

Thanks, everybody.

Unfortunately, I've had to rule OS out because of the car issue, based on your posts. I appreciate you having saved me time. Cheers!

Then you can rule out BSL as well.

Then you can rule out BSL as well. I can't imagine any gulf coast town that is livable without a car, from Mississippi to Panama City.
