One of the loveliest monuments I've ever seen. She was shaped out of marble by a gifted artist to look over the graves of 5 young girls.

Very difficult to manage marble. Unforgiving material. So, whoever toppled the statue was extremely determined. And, in my opinion, just plain mean. I do not think that this was the work of some misguided mischief-makers.

The Natchez City Cemetery has organized a fund for donations. https://www.newsbreak.com/mississipp...-turning-angel

It's worth mentioning that the Turning Angel is one of the first things I visit when in Natchez.

This is another tragic result of Big Media's Pavlovian Conditioning of the public. In the minds of those lacking the capacity for critical thinking, statues are supposed to be destroyed (because it's justifiable and fun to destroy statues - because news outlets make it look like justifiable fun). Those doing the destroying, are clearly not bothering to distinguish between "Good Statues" and "Bad Statues" - and may not even be familiar with that distinction.

Issues deriving from History and Social Justice, are not truly considerations, although the beings destroying the statues, are vaguely aware of people on TV, using big words which include 'History' and 'Social Justice', to excuse and glorify the destruction of the statues.

But beyond basic Pavlovian Response, there has to be a particularly intense depravity, for one to choose an ANGEL, for destruction. Was it the book, from which this angel was reading to the little girls, that these creatures found threatening?

The Turning Angel watches over the graves of 5 women and girls who were killed long ago in an accident at their place of work. It was commissioned by the owner of the business, which never reopened.

Why someone would want to destroy it is beyond my understanding.

Apparently there is a suspect, in another county. Sounds like maybe he talked and someone turned him in.

My initial thought is this is not connected to any of type of protest or as a result of the call to remove images portraying christian figures as white. I'm betting it is someone with mental issues and/or under the influence of mind altering substances. It will be interesting to learn of the motive.

Why? Just why? Such senseless vandalism.

An arrest has been made.

$40,000 damages.

https://www.knoe.com/2020/06/27/natc...ngel-monument/

"Police arrested 20-year-old Austin Petty of Crosby Thursday and charged him with felony malicious mischief.

According to NPD, Petty along with others drove into Natchez from out of town on Tuesday. They said Petty rocked the monument until it fell to the ground. Police said the others remained in the vehicle and warned him 'not to do anything stupid.' Police say the other occupants were cooperative with the investigation and encouraged Petty to talk to the police.

NPD said that their testimonies were supported by video evidence, and while the arrest provided closure, the principle is what mattered."

Great article. It appears that the miscreant just had a foolish moment.
The donation address is given. A little from each of us should do the trick.

The Natchez Cemetery contains history lessons for those who are interested.
Here's a link to the more interesting features such as a man buried in his rocking chair, a prostitute with only one name and a tombstone with a cellar-like entrance.

Yes Listener. A contribution from each of us will do the trick. When I said that marble is an unforgiving material I meant that it is very difficult to work with. One slip of the chisel and UH OH! This is a good video of a sculptor using traditional tools on marble. https://www.khanacademy.org/humaniti...ditional-tools Just imagine using those techniques to form her delicate hands!

The Turning Angel, without the pedestal, has to be at least 5' tall and must weigh 600 lbs? That character must have been exceptionally motivated.

Like Gloria said, who would choose an ANGEL to vandalize? The Turning Angel is a symbol with substance. Ideally, her image should appeal to one's better nature. A drawing power that transcends party politics and theosophical differences.

I wonder if the city will have an unveiling ceremony to celebrate the Angel's return.
