I assumed that the ultimatum over the basketball and baseball tournaments was merely the SEC's opening salvo. If the legislature had resisted I suspect eventually the SEC would have begun making rumblings about whether Ole Miss and Miss State should remain in the league. The politicians were obviously more afraid of the voters from losing the SEC than giving up the flag.

No question, that was the shot across the bow (along with the best football player in MS threatening not to play - which may have snowballed).

Years ago, the NCAA banned Men's NCAA Basketball Tourney games in states that still carried confederate flag imagery, but MS was/is never going to host a tourney game so it had little impact.
