Some people just want to go to college and aren't interested in some high powered degree from an Ivy. The Mississippi schools are just fine for that. And as I said before, I think if you are looking for a mid sized University in a small to mid sized town all of the Mississippi schools are pretty nice that are out there with the exception of Alcorn and Jackson State. One of them is in a more urban place and the other is as rural as you can get. So a person has those two options as well.

But sure, the Mississippi schools aren't cream of the crop nationally.

Just to follow up...I have a student that has been at Mississippi State for 3 years. She has a 4 year scholarship and it looks like we will need a 5th year to finish the degree. We lease an apartment there and were thinking about changing her residency on her 21st. Birthday. Anyone done or gone through this?

As far as the University, she/we could not be happier with the choice to send her there. At this stage of the game I could list multiple reason why it was the best decision. She is getting a great education and has already had multiple summer opportunities that have already lined her up with a job at graduation....

That is great to hear. Again, I love the Mississippi Universities size which allows them to provide more personal attention with their students.

If you want to get her in state status I would get a Mississippi DL and car tag ASAP. She needs to get some sort of job to prove she is employed and paying state taxes. But it still could be tough as many schools won't give you residency unless you've worked for a full year. And some schools require it has to be full time for a year. Don't know how Mississippi schools are on this but it's certainly worth applying for in state status.
