Best of luck! Sounds like you'll be more likely to stay in state.

Although I'm not in the target demographic for the recruitment process, one of the articles that I read mentioned mid-career workers seeking training. That was the clincher that made me think that perhaps it might be a plan.

Thanks for the good wishes. I hope I get in! The class size has been increased to 80, but they are still recruiting, so it's not a guarantee that I will be accepted.

UPDATE:

Out of the 80 or so who began the coding academy in July, there are 23 left. I'm not at the top or the bottom amongst all the youngsters, but comfortably above the middle and looking forward to graduating in May. Because I'm officially retired, I'll be approaching the job market without an immediate need for an income. What I'm really looking forward to is being able to bank my pension once I've gotten a position.

The academy will begin accepting new applications soon, so if you know anyone interested, please check out their website:

Update on the Academies

The Downtown Jackson and South Jackson campuses were merged a few months ago. Next week, those of us who stuck it out the full 11 months will present our final projects and hopefully graduate that Thursday.

It has been an amazing experience with some of the best people I've ever met. Most of us spent the evening at a reception for tech volunteers for the Bean Path, an arm of the Jackson Tech District being developed by Nashli Sephus, currently head of diversity for Amazon.

They have begun accepting applications and the interviewing process. The target demographics are recent high school graduates, career changers, and really, anyone interested in coding. For anyone who is interested, please check out their website. The application process is rigorous, and the course is even more so. Only about a fourth of us who started are left.

That said, I highly recommend the program and would encourage anyone who knows someone wanting to learn the skills to become a full-stack developer, act now before the application process closes.

As our instructor says,

Go forth and code!
