I've had the fortune of traveling MS extensively for the past 15 years or so and have immensely enjoyed it. Unfortunately being the poorest state, we have our share of trashy areas. A few days ago I was traveling through Carthage and noticed how much garbage was strewn aside Highway 16. I wish there was something we could do about the lack of pride many of our citizens have in their communities.

I've been to Greenville dozens of times in the last 5 years, it's by far a worse town, but not as "trashy" IMO.

The area around the Tyson plant is the worst. I don't know where folks are getting their styrofoam container lunches, but they certainly throw them out within a 5-mile radius of the plant going north or south on 35. j

Another area that is trashy is Highway 18 between Utica and Port Gibson.

There's a large abandoned apartment complex off of South Broadway, everytime I drive by I think it would be a good setting for an apocalyptic movie.

Obligatory Jackson post.

Okay, now that's out of the way. Lots of places in the Delta fit the bill, will agree with others here that Greenville is the worst, Clarksdale is really rough too. As jhadorn once said, Batesville used to be a whole different town, but has declined since the 1990s.

Those who throw trash are ultimately to blame, but city and state services certainly don't help. At the state level you can see that grass isn't cut often enough, and trash isn't picked up often enough, from the highways. At the city level, if they never send out street sweepers, eventually the city or town will look like crap.
