In the late 1970s, a new group of immigrants came to Biloxi looking for work. They found themselves at odds with the descendants of French and Yugoslavian immigrants in the seafood business.

Interesting at that time the Vietnamese refugees were also coming into Oakland, CA. where I was working at the water district. I remember going out on a high-bill complaint at an apartment building with 200 units, where the bill tripled after they moved in. I met the manager there, and the plan was to show him how to check toilets for bad fill or drain valves. With the majority not speaking English we asked one resident who was fluent in both languages to accompany us. We entered 3 units, and that was enough to find the problem. In every case the kitchen and bathroom faucets were running with no one using them. The translator asked the people and they explained that they didn't know water cost money and should be shut off when not being used.

In my experience Vietnamese in general are hardworking responsible people.
A couple of times in Biloxi at casinos I distinctly remember many Vietnamese as really great employees at the craps table.
Anyway I wouldn't talk bad about them. And the food? Excellent

I guess that attitude came from living in a tropical climate where water was plentiful.
New Orleans and Houston have large Vietnamese communities. Their climates are more like “home”, except for the winter cold snaps.

They also dominate the nail parlor business.

My firm employs several second-generation Vietnamese refugees. The majority are hardworking, polite and honest, great employees.
