If people want to hold Carolyn Bryant accountable for Emmitt Till’s murder, why not file a civil suit against her?

And if the ultimate goal is a payout, people should be aware that the county where Till died has a majority-black government. They may not be willing to pay up for something their ancestors didn’t do.

Activists out for this poor old woman's blood are not much better than Till's killers.

It is no coincidence there is a new movie about Emmett Till.

The guys who murdered Till were not part of the Delta elite.
Are we supposed to believe a cabal of wealthy Mississippi racists is shielding the former Mrs. Bryant from scrutiny?

Yesterday, a Leflore County Grand Jury declined to indict her: https://mississippitoday.org/2022/08...t-tills-death/

I'm for justice to be served, no matter how long delayed, but it will be hard to get any type of conviction on an 88-year-old. Her attorney would probably just keep delaying it based on, "frail health." If she did ever go to trial, how many witnesses are still alive to testify against her?

Yet the world keeps capturing and arresting former Nazis from WW2, all of whom are older than Bryant. No one ever cares about their "frail health."

You're putting her role in the Till affair on the same level as well-documented war crimes?

Just to educate you, no Nazi war criminal has ever been prosecuted by the State of MS or in US District Court, which is where the former Ms. Bryant would face charges. They couldn't even get a grand jury indictment on her in Leflore County (a county that is almost 75% black).

Well, no, but that’s because the Nazi war crimes did not occur in the state of Mississippi. But that’s just a technicality. JacksonPanther’s point remains valid inasmuch as murder, in most civilized jurisdictions, has no statute of limitations.

That said, the degree of Mrs. Bryant’s culpability would quickly turn into a legal morass would this ancient case be laboriously brought into court. She was not party to the direct torture, maiming, and murder of Emmett Till, just the centerpiece to the provincial henhouse gossip furor that erupted over a kid playing a prank whose gravity he did nor grasp in the moment. Even if she had been a fair, compassionate, grounded, and reasonable person (which she was not), her immediate environment and its mores would have quashed that kind of decency in short order. There were witnesses, both white and black, to the ill-advised prank. She couldn’t have denied it, she couldn’t have minimized it, she couldn’t have blown it off. The tongues went a-waggin’ faster than a thunderbolt. She was complicit in the crime, as was the entire milieu (including the two black accomplices to the murder), but she had no choice in the matter, short of suddenly bolting from town to Nebraska or something.

I'm shocked. Some just can't help themselves.
