Another way to recognize Yankees is that they will sometimes answer 7 year old posts. I'm not sure where that trait comes from, but it doesn't speak well for the oft-touted superiority of Yankee educational systems.....

Another way that works for me. If I speak first to someone and the first word out of their lips is, "Pardon?", then I know I have struck gold.

I have lived in north Mississippi for over 40 years & it is home now. Three children went to public schools & did good. All have good jobs & live nearby.
I don't see the taxes as real high like someone posted. I pay no state tax on my retirement income. Have 2 older vehicles & tags are very cheap. I know tags are high for new cars but taxes decrease as the vehicle ages.
I am sure there are drugs problems everywhere, but I have never encountered any problems where I live.
Know a lot of people here both black & white. For the most part I haven't seen any outright racism although I am sure it exists.
Not afraid to walk any where around town. Overall, I think it is a pretty good place especially for retired people.

I never 'thought' about that. I guess I would say a person from the South. Or, specifically a person from Florida or Mississippi etc. If they were from Oregon, I would say someone from Oregon. I don't and never have thought about America as North or South. I also have never heard anyone I know say Yankee. I am just surprised that people do. Really!!!! I have no clue why an honest, innocent question turns into such a big deal!

"A pardon is the forgiveness of a crime and the cancellation of the relevant penalty" Do you hear the word pardon often? I don't Maybe you mean Pardon as in "Pardon Me, I missed what you said?" I don't say that either. I either say "I'm sorry, I didn't hear you" Or, the always popular "Excuse me, I need to get by". Everyone in America uses words differently & that doesn't make that a bad thing it just adds to diversity. My sister-in-law says things like dresser and turn signal and tennis shoes. I know what she means and I don't make fun of her because we have different terms for different things.....

Heh.

When I went to State, on the first day of class one of my instructors polled us on where we were from. About 80% of the class was from Mississippi, and most of the rest were from places like Tennessee, Alabama, and Louisiana. Those who remained standing, the professor pointed to three random people in a row, and was all "Yank, yank, yank! If you're not from Mississippi, you're a damn YANKEE!"

I think he was half-joking, but anyway I got a kick out of that.

It's where my wife lives. That way when I want "some". I know where to look.

Most people in the Midwest would never refer to their selves or other Midwesterners as Yankees. Many Midwesterners resent the Yankee label when apllied to theirseves because to them, Yankees are people from New England. Ive heard many people from Indiana say they are Hoosiers, not Yankees and they mean it. Most Southerners consider anybody North of the Ohio River as Yankees. Now down here in Texas I occasionally hear Hispanics refer to Texans as Yankees.

I poke around in 4 or 5 different boards on city data. Every board has people who respond to old threads. I actually believe this is a problem with the city data software, that regularly shows old threads to people.
