Hi-
I hope to visit Vicksburg Nat'l Military Park someday, which I've only flown over en route to a wedding in Jan. 2008 in Jackson (Laurel).

Any Tips/Advice??

Thanks,
fallguy

If you are a Civil War enthusiast, plan to spend a couple of days in the area. I was surprised at the size and the number of monuments that are in the national military park. We had planned to spend a couple of hours there last year and ended up spending about ten hours over two days.

I used my bicycle to tour the park in less than one day. I only saw a few people there on a mid week day. I could pedal right up to a sign, read it and move right along. It was much better than getting in and out of the car every hundred yards. Of course this was on a nice spring day, not in the oppressive humid heat of summer (definitely avoid that). In the spring, the trees are blooming and everything is emerald green. There are hundreds of memorials, plaques, signs and markers. Not as large as Gettysburg but still quite impressive. The Illinois memorial is really something to see.

We would take our kids there about twice a year and they loved it but like the others said it takes a while.
we would spend the day in the park then check into a hotel for the night.

The Battlefield Inn is next to the park. I stayed there for business for a few weeks, and despite being rudely awoken every morning by the talking parrots in the lobby, I would recommend staying there. Free drinks are served on the veranda every day, and the employees look, talk, and act like they lived during the Civil War.
