I have some questions about your state. (Jackson, Hattiesburg: fit in, university)

I was just wondering what the general lifestyles, attitudes are of the people of MS?

Reason I'm asking is that I am a really outdoorsy type of person, I mean I would love to spend alot of time outdoors in a nice climate or swim in my pool out my back yard, barbecue alot, have garden parties, go hunting and fishing or participate in watersports at a lake. You know that kinda stuff.

So i was just wondering if MS had that kinda outlook you know outdoorys, caters for people like myself?

I love hot climates, been exposed to humidity before when i was over there and from my vacations throughout Europe (Spain, Greece, Italy, France) so i know what to expect weather wise but not so sure if i'd fit in. Stupid question but i just wanted to ask because its been sorta preying on my mind lately.

My fiance is going back to MS in March and well im going to move there once i graduate from university. I just want to make sure im making the right decision or whether or not MS is right for me in terms of lifestyle, way of life.

Granted Scotland is far from the same as MS, in fact its the complete opposite i hate the weather here. It is mild/cold for the most part, people are stressed out constantly, people are in so much of a hurry and just dont stop to appreciate the simple things in life. The cost of living is really expensive, i dont like the work/life balance how people here just seem to work work work and not have any time to actually live their lives. I'm sick of being stuck not being able to do what i actually want to do. Too much government control also which peeves me, especially when it comes to hunting.

Property is expensive here, everything is but dont get me wrong im not trying to paint a horrible picture of Scotland but i live here, been there done that and boutht the T shirt so i know exactly what i've got myself into.

My fiance has had the opportunity to sample life here, as much as he has enjoyed it he does think it is very expensive and he doesn't like socialism. He misses the simple life of Mississippi. We are praying that he can get a decent career there but only time will tell.

Sorry for the long post guys but i just thought you should know what im thinking right now.

I just want honest answers because i've never lived in the U.S and im not sure i would be accepted there as i am an outsider and don't really know much about what life is really like there.

You can do all of the things you mentioned here. We spend a lot of time outdoor despite the humidity. Hunting is a major activity during deer season.

On the coast, people are very outdoors like. Locals stay out of the gulf though... they travel to orange beach or florida to get wet in the gulf. But there are lots of cook outs, and what not there.

The coast is mild and not very humid.. there are like 3-4 month of every year the humidity is killer and bugs are rampant.. but the rest of the year its very nice. Great thunder storms, nice rain storms, and frogs chirping are all things you'll come to love.

Also the coast is the most religious free in its thinking and most accepting of other faiths. Also less racial tension on the coast.

I love the look of the coast but the hurricanes are off putting, i probably wouldn't feel at ease. Do they occur mostly every year or is there a slim chance of losing ones house?

From what you guys have said it sounds good to me. I don't like bugs though.

If you like being outside and warm weather then you will love it in Ms.
As far as hunting in fishing goes, it is just a way of life for most people in the south.

As for the hurricanes here I do not feel they are a big deal, but I am from there so I am use to them.

The bugs are bad and I do not know anywhere in MS. you live with them dam things.

I have a big fear of spiders but i can handle reptiles, not much of a problem to me.

If hurricanes didn't happen often in the MS gulf coast i'd definately like to live there. Quieter than FL and cheaper no?

It is very beautiful there.

I do not think we have that many hurricanes compared to FL.
but again that could be because I lived there my whole live so it was kinda normal to me.

Lots cheaper than FL.

Can not help you with the spiders they are everywhere but what is funny is I have never been bite one time in my life by a spider till I moved to El Paso Tx. I got bit last month and it hurt!!!
so I am more scared of the spiders here in El Paso than Ms.
when I was a kid I would play with spiders

Ms. coast is a great place to live and the stroms are part of the charm for me.

From what i see/have read it looks pretty grim still, even after what 4 years?

Slow recovery well as can be expected due to the battering the gulf coast got. Though i really dont know if i could live there due to hurricanes, its off putting. I've always dreamed of living by the coast especially in a hot climate. I loved Myrtle Beach, SC i could have stayed there forever. But as usual reality hits with a bang

I've been looking at the Hattiesburg, Jackson areas too, not too far from the coast though would they still get a battering from a hurricane?

Most of my fiance's family live in Houlka, Okolona, Senatobia, Aberdeen, MS.

I'm hoping none of the area's mention are really run down/poor and non progressive i am scared of that as i dont have that where i live currently.

I lived in Mississippi for 3 1/2 years and it was a good experience and I enjoyed a lot of it.
But the facts are that Mississippi is the poorest, fattest, undereducated, has the most unwed mothers of all the US States and I'm sure there are other lists Mississippi is at the bottom of. Mississippi has a lot of good things, but you are going to have to take the good with the bad.
