Hey everyone, I'm interested in pursuing my MBA and am stuck between Ole Miss and Miss State. I know most people say the 2 programs are about the same but I gotta think one edges out the other a little bit. I noticed Ole Miss Business got ranked in US News but Miss State seems to be focused on its future. I also noticed many of the faculty at Ole Miss have degrees from Miss State.

Ole Miss is ranked higher nationally overall. It also has a nicer campus as well. Oxford is pretty rural and quaint, while Starkville is more spread out. The vast majority of MSU's students are in state, whereas Ole Miss has more out of state students. Ole Miss also wins in Honors College. The Grove at Ole is considered the best tailgating in the country if you're into football

Mississippi State's school of business building has been completely redone and looks very nice. I know people with accounting degrees from there who have done very well.

Why would you go to either of these schools for an MBA? Neither is ranked AT ALL, at least according to US News rankings. Why pay all that money for a degree that won't be respected nationally?

I'm doing it more bc of cost. I cant afford to attend a top notch school so I'm trying to find a balance between cost and reputation.

Well, given that an MBA from Ole Miss or Miss State will have no reputation at all, how does that impact your balance? You may as well go to Keller/Univ of Phoenix.

This is what is wrong with elitism when it comes to MBA's. People fail to realize that the top ranked schools - Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, Wharton, etc. - are literally less than 2% of all business schools, therefore, the remaining students in 98% of schools are failures?
Ole Miss', Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee - none ranked very high (well AL and Auburn are moderately ranked), but guess what -- nobody cares. The whole "if you don't go to Harvard for your MBA then you might as well not go" mentality is completely inaccurate. Granted, I would not quit my job and move half way across the country to go to a moderate or just "good" program, but that is not the situation for the majority of people. For the majority of people, cost and location are the two biggest factors. Nearly the entire upper management at my job have masters from a local school that most people wouldn't even recognize. Don't get caught up on this top 10 BS. I know people with MBAs from Miss State, Alabama, Auburn, Tenn, Middle Tenn State, Florida State, and all of them are doing quite well for themselves.
To get back to the OP's question, if it were me I would choose Ole Miss. From the little I know about each (and I went to a SEC school myself), Ole Miss seems to have a better reputation.

I have an MBA from MSU, and it has worked out pretty well for me. Not to sound like a jerk, but it has much more to do with me than the school listed on the diploma. That being said, I've seen folks come and go with degrees from the bigger name schools. Those are good for getting you in the door, but that's about it. If you want to put your time in, prove yourself, and work your way up somewhere, the school you get the degree from won't matter much.

I'd focus more on the curriculum within each program. Which school offers core courses and electives that align with your career goals? When are classes offered - in case you'll be working at the same time? I recently moved to Mississippi and looked at the MBA programs at MSU and Southern Miss. While MSU is a longer drive for me (much longer), the core curriculum and option for a an emphasis area led me to MSU.
