Ocean Springs is a beatiful artsy community. You would love living here. In November we have the Peter Anderson Festival which is unbeliveable. There are exhibits from all over the country and people flock to it. It is a juried show so there is no junk.

We have lots of good restaurants, many upscale subdivisions, a museum, art galleries etc. etc.

If you move to Ocean Springs, you will not regret it.

I would not advise anyone to move to Gautier period.. I have lived here since 2003. It is full of crime, and awful neighborhoods. Hickory Hills in Gautier is nice, but the crime has seemed to move there from people of neighborhoods looking to cause problems in the nicer neighborhoods. Pascagoula is better in some areas, but really I would say that Ocean Springs, St Martin area is very nice, and have wonderful schools, nice neighborhoods, and plenty of things to do for children. Another horrible area to stay away from other than Gautier is Moss Point. Dont get me started on that place lol.

You've never been to "the Goat" and you're planning on moving there?

Brave soul.

Gauthier is... small, but it is near the interstate so you can get out quick.
Not sure how they've recovered from the hurricane but keep in mind that is
marshy and not sandy beach.

It is small town Mississippi gulf coast living. You'll be commuting for work.
The rent / home prices may be cheap there... likely a benefit.

I'd think about another city if I were you. That is merely my opinion.
I'm sure there are some fine folks in the Goat.

I live in Gautier and I love it. We are in a bit of an unusal circumstance...we found a fantastic property on the Singing River. I mean the river is right in our back yard. We have a two tiered dock with a boat launch and can fish right off the upper dock or go down the steps to the bulkhead and fish right into the river. Our neighbors are wonderful...most of them are pretty big in the construction industry, so have good incomes. The neighbors next door on one side work in the refinery in Pascagoula and will be moving soon and the neighbors on the other side are big developers in N'awlins and this is their river home. I have become very spoiled to where I live and wouldn't even want to think about leaving it. We ALMOST got another house on the bayou in Gautier...we still drive by sometime and would have taken that house had this one not come available (and we had inside information before it ever hit the market.) If you have children, Ocean Springs is going to have the best school system by far. We don't have school-age children, so that wasn't an issue with us. We just love it here and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Our neighbors are fantastic, look out for each other and watch our property when we are not at home...it's a nice little dead end street with homeowners with good incomes, so it's a bit unusal in what it has to offer. Farther up the river is the golf course where there are some other fantastic homes. We've had a blast living here on the river and everyone goes "all out" on holidays. I have no complaints and love my little corner of the world. The bayou we looked on had a fantastic house on it (Bayou Pierre) with the street being near it. We have bayous around us, but the big "selling point" was that fantastic river view and our own dock. There is another subdivision in Gautier we looked at that we loved. There is a historical house that was in Southern Living Magazine at one time and most people in the neighborhood are professionals, with quite a few doctors living there. I don't remember the name of it, but when we were looking the neighbors there also came out to greet us without being nosy. I have NO complaints about Gautier...I also love Ocean Springs. Those two are my favorites. If you are looking to rent, I know the house right next door is coming available in September...a man in North Carolina owns the house and rents it to our wonderful neighbors, whom we are really going to miss!

I've never heard Gautier (not spelled Gauthier) called "The Goat." That's a new one for me but, then again, my neighbors are pretty well-to-do and don't consider this portion of Gautier to be one inhabited by goats. :/ I have never run into any problems here in my neighborhood at all...people have been exceptionally nice, helpful, neighborly, etc. and there have been no incidents (break-ins, thefts, violent crimes, etc.) associated with my street that I'm aware of...the only "incident" involved a group of young boys trespassing on my neighbors' property while they were not home so they could fish off their dock. I nicely asked them if they were guests of my neighbors and when they said there were not, I nicely told them it was private property and that they could not hang out, play, fish or climb the circular staircase to go on their balcony. They quietly left. I live very close to Hickory Hills golf course. Now, I have heard to stay away from Moss Point. I have not been given any reason other than crime...that's it. I was just advised to avoid it at all costs. Gulfport is fraught with crime...you couldn't pay me to live there. Yes, there's lots to do, but there are so many businesses that have never recovered from Katrina, so many boarded up homes and businesses and people suffering from loss of income, and the crime is bad with child pornography being rampant so I have to asssume that crimes against children are high on the list (my father-in-law is in law enforcement there and he works in that division.) Oh, and contrary to what one previous poster stated, the rent in our area of Gautier isn't all that cheap!

Just my opinion.
If you have school age children DO NOT even consider Helena since it's in the Moss Point School District!! I grew up in Helena but went to private school from the 6th grade on. ECHS is a very good school and we considered moving into their SD before we relocated almost 10 years ago. I go back to Helena from time to time to visit family but I would NOT want to live there again!!!

Having been born in Pascagoula and raised in Helena until I moved away 10 years ago, I must agree that I've never heard it called "The Goat" either. That's a new one on me, as well.

I remember when the mall was first opened and what excitement there was for all of us in that area since, at that time, the closest malls were either Edgewater in Biloxi or BelAir Mall in Mobile. It does seem as though the mall has declined considerably in the past few years. It had started to do so before we left the coast but even when we go back, it seems that it's only gotten worse.

I grew up just a few miles from MP and there's not enough money on the planet to make me move there!!! The schools are probably the worst in the state and since MS is already noted for it's poor education, that's really saying something...and not something good, I might add. According to City-Data.com, they gave MPHS a 36 out of 100!!!

If I had to move back to the MS Gulf Coast, it would be Ocean Springs. this might not be a good thing since I LOVE Hartz Fried Chicken on Hwy. 90 just before you go over the bridge into Biloxi! They have some wonderful food and I always make it a point to eat there when I go back home to visit family!

Ocean Springs is a great city; I couldn't live anywhere else.

As far as Gautier- Stay away from the south side. That area can get a bit rough at times.

I will not go to Moss Point for any reason. I just do not feel comfortable stopping for a red light in this city- especially when a few feet away a thug is selling drugs on the corner.

I live in the upper end of Ward 5. I don't think I've even been down to the south side, which I guess would be Ward 1. Is the area high in crime? Moss Point scares me half to death. I heard an elderly out-of-state couple stopped at a gas station to ask for directions and when the man walked over to a guy in the gas station parking lot, the guy immediately pulled a gun on him and shot and killed him while his horrified wife watched. My manicurist had a friend who worked there and got shot in his own shop! He said it's bad news.
