writing retreat in mississippi? (Jackson, Biloxi: rentals, homes, college)

Hi everyone,

I hope you can offer some advice. I'd like to come down to the deep south to work on my book for a week, so I'm looking for somewhere that offers some beautiful views and options to go for a stroll/walk into town, but not somewhere with a lot of distractions/attractions/tourists, as I'll want to focus on writing rather than having too much fun... I don't drive and will be flying from NYC so it has to be somewhere I can reach fairly easily from an airport by train/bus/taxi - I don't mind a fairly long journey from the airport so long as it isn't a complex journey.
Either location or accomodation tips would be much appreciated. Ideally I guess I'd like a very small town in a picturesque setting.

LOL that's hard. I love my town and it has all those things, but Columbus might do you better. Not a lot of "tourists" anywhere. Even Greenwood has a beautiful boulevard with some gorgeous homes.

That's what I suggest. The bridgewater is located right in the nice part of town and the rates are ridiculously cheap. I would not want to live in Greenwood but from what you requested that's the place, I'd say - small enough town you can get around (where you'd want to be) on foot but definitely plenty of southern flavor.

I'm not from Mississippi (and don't mean to dissuade you) but I have been a couple times in the summer. You are aware that it can be ungodly hot and humid there at this time of year? But perhaps you mean a little later on...

Natchez - River views and historic downtown.

Oxford - College campus and historic downtown

Ocean Springs - Beach views and historic downtown

Vicksburg - River and military park views, interesting downtown, mixture of gritty and historic

An hour ago it was 77 degrees outside. By bedtime it will be down in the lower 70's and, as I sit and enjoy my hot tub, I'm sure I'll be dipping my head under the water every now and then to keep it warm.

It's the end of August. Sometimes we have a hot indian summer along the end of September, but this year has been a full degree cooler on average than last year.

Northern MS is in the foothills of the Appalachias. The coast can be sweltering and Jackson can be miserable because of all the concrete, but the northern part of the state is known for hot days but usually cool evenings. Any area with lots of trees and manicured grounds can be very pleasant in this part of the state. I used to go back and forth a lot when I was a teen, I can tell you that if you can handle southern Michigan in early August you can definitely handle northern MS this time of year.

Maybe Fairhope, Al. would be a possible locale. You could fly into Mobile, Al. or Pensacola, Fl. Or Oxford, Ms.
