My family and I lived in OS from 2003 to January 2005 and moved back to New Hampshire for family reasons. I love the seasons in NH but do miss the Gulf Coast as we really enjoyed our time there (wonderful, friendly people, slow pace, delicious food, Cruisin the Coast, etc.). The rest of my family except me could care less about NH (especially now that it is snowing again) and would prefer to relocate back to the coast at some point soon. My question, having only lived in OS, is what would some of the pros and cons be in comparing Bay St. Louis to OS as far as living there. I probably will end up back in OS just because I know it, but would like to know if there might be any reason to prefer BSL? Just curious I guess. BSL sounds like a nice community to me also. The part of my family that would be joining my husband and I are all grown now except for our 3-year-old granddaughter we have adopted. My husband is a paramedic, soon to be nurse, so I don't know if either location would be preferable to the other. I'm just tired of moving and am leaning toward playing it safe with what I know in OS, but am just curious about what it is like living in BSL before making a decision. Thanks for your help!!

I lived in Ocean Springs and recently moved. OS has almost completely recovered from Katrina. BSL was almost completely destroyed and I don't think it has recovered. For certain, it doesn't look like you remember. I think you should visit and then decide.

In Ocean Springs, for the most part only the houses immediately on the beach road were taken out. It looks basically the same if not better. Downtown Ocean Springs is thriving with restaurants and shops. In Bay St. Louis the downtown and several blocks inland were completely taken out. However, the streets are now right in the middle of being completely redone and there is a new building downtown that's quite beautiful. There are still houses in Bay St. Louis including some of the turn of the century cottages. It's just very much still in rebuilding mode and the setting is still as beautiful as ever. And the main highway through town looks about the same. There is a beautiful new bridge connecting Bay St. Louis and Pass Christian. Neighboring Diamonhead was hit also but I believe it's pretty much built back and thriving. Pass Christian kept many of its homes along the beach which are in different stages of being redone.

Toss Up.
Both are great.
Both are on the water(Gulf).
Both have nice parks and places to get some sun.
Both are minutes from other Casinos.

You'll enjoy either one.

That's what I was thinking. From what I saw after Katrina, looks like BSL had to start over from scratch. It's hard enough with human structures, but when those beautiful old trees are gone..... Such a shame, because if I were to move to the Coast, that's where I would have moved..... OS is the choice now.

I would also recommend Ocean Springs over Bay St. Louis. I really like both towns and spent a lot of time in them with my job (although I lived in Biloxi) but Bay St. Louis has a lot further to go in its recovery than Ocean Springs. BSL has fewer restaurants, stores, etc. But they are working hard to bring it back. You could also live in Gulfport or Biloxi and be a short driving distance from either town.

Bay St. Louis is only about 35 minutes from New Orleans. In my book that is a huge plus. But I like the Ocean Springs area as well.

My in-laws live in Ocean Springs (and we are living with them until we find the home we want) and you can see the ocean from their house, just down the street. The home was wiped out before they purchased it and it was built back (I didn't see if before Katrina, but it's beautiful now!) The neighborhood looks great, with a few homes to go being built back in Gulf Park Estates where they live. To me, it's one of the lovliest towns on the MS Gulf with many amenities to offer. The only pro for Bay St. Louis, to me, is its close proximity to NOLA. I guess I'm very partial to Ocean Springs and it looks great now after Katrina!
