There is no ugly. It is a perfectly respectable state university with a quality honors college. It offers good value. My niece paid a lot more and got a lot less at an eastern school. Has a reputation as a "suitcase college" so your daughter might want to ask about that during her campus tour. Students seem polite and friendly--nice overall atmosphere.

A college where many students commute or go back home on weekends. USM does have residence halls though, and is a good school.

Southern Miss is definitely a respectable university and it is the 3rd largest university in Mississippi behind Mississippi State and Ole Miss. A lot of residents and students seem to enjoy Hattiesburg as well - it is a good sized city with a good selection of services and amenities. There are many apartments in the area to choose from as well. The city itself has strong roots to the coast, stretching from New Orleans, LA to Mobile, AL. Many students who attend Southern Miss use this stretch of the coast to get away in their free time.

Very good school to attend. 2 of my cousins graduated from there and they loved it. can't hurt that a legend (Brett Farve) went there too.

My mom's from Hattiesburg - my uncle, a cousin, and even a friend from Mobile (where I grew up) went there that I know personally (my cousin was a Dixie Darling). I enjoyed going to a few Southern football games as a kid. It's a nice school.

Enjoyed my years there in undergrad, and Hattiesburg is a great town. It's close enough to the Gulf Coast and New Orleans if you need to get away. Also, they're the only major university in the state that has Mardi Gras as an official holiday.

It is definitely "suitcase city" on the weekends though. It's roughly a 90 minute drive from Jackson and roughly a 60-90 minute drive from Gulfport/Biloxi/Pascagoula, and the vast majority of the students there seemed to be from these areas, so many of them go home. We also had a large population of Louisianans too.

SOUTHERN MISS TO THE TOP!!

I currently attend USM and absolutely ADORE it!! You can ask anyone who goes here - everyone loves it. Everyone who asks me, "Do you like Southern?" and hears me say, "I love it!!" is never surprised and goes on to say that they've never met a person who doesn't or didn't adore this school.

It is a suitcase school, but there is a still a ton to do on the weekends and enough people stay that it isn't deserted or anything.

Southern Miss TO THE TOP!

I will be graduating in December. Advising is HORRIBLE. You have to stay on top of your "smart sheet" or "degree progress" yourself at all costs, and MAKE your advisor do their duties of helping you. Most teachers are amazing in and out of class from my knowledge and experience, but advising is a task to have done correctly.

Hattiesburg is okay, but i'm from a large city. I don't like it here one bit. Stereotypical southern city that is far too overpopulated. Roads are getting repaved all over as of now, but that won't help the driving.

If she is going to campus, and staying on campus...she will be perfectly fine. I know a lot of people here that are at USM with me and we all avoid driving if possible from 8am-5pm. It seems that the population has shifted since Katrina, there is a LOT of non-locals aside from students.
