Well we all know Jackson is the Capital, but Meridian is that mysteriously quiet Queen City that has been all but ignored when it comes to talking about places to live and visit in Mississippi. with no main University campuses and the shame of being the "1st capital", only to be hijacked of that title by Andrew Jackson and Lefluer, Meridian has no claim to fame.
Little do some know, Meridian is a very beautiful city rich in Mississippi history and also has a nice lake in it, Lake Oktibee.

Are there any Meridians in here that can vouch for your city?

I think that most people view Meridian as a plain jane, utilitarian city but it has some unique places and qualities. Go see the Hamasa Shrine Temple Theater, once the second largest theater in the US, with one of only 2 pipe organs of it's kind in existence. Dentzel Carousel in Highland Park is a national landmark and the only 2 row stationary dentzel menagerie in existence. Other places of interest include Jimmie Rodgers Museum, Merrehope, Peavey Visitor Center, and nearby Dunn's Falls.

It's easy for me to forget about Meridian sometimes too, I don't know why.

I can't do it because I dated a girl form Meridian. she drove me all over that city and it's nice!.. I was shocked comiNg from Jackson on 2.5 hours away and didn' know. I would always go to Vicksburg but Meridian not so much . but it's a NICE city.

I recommend to anybody visiting to take a road trip to it and ride around. you won't be disappointed.. the crime is non-existent compared to Jackson.

Well, is anything actually going on in Meridian?? When you see it, you can see it was once a bustling city. The downtown is a ghostly collection of lovely buildings that have definitely seen better days. The topography of the area is also nice. I've always wondered what the main business or industry there is. It really could be a great place if it came back!

BTW - isn't or wasn't a major guitar maker located there?

Meridian opened the Riley performing arts center downtown within the restored opera house, in partnership with Mississippi State, and apparently they have some very nice events there. Meridian does have some beautiful neighborhoods with those nice high hills winding through town. I think the blight along I-20, the beautiful and large but still mostlly empty downtown and even the somewhat sprawly feeling of the 2 highways running up either side of town makes Meridian feel to me like a little bit of a mess, like a house that just needs a good staightening out. But they do have a nice assets, including three large hospitals, several industries including Peavey electronics and several auto parts industries, and several top rated county public schools. The location seems convenient to Altanta, New Orleans, Florida, etc. If they could clean up downtown and the highways I think they would really have something.

There is also a Naval Air Station there; I don't know exactly how much it contributes to the local economy, but I would imagine that the impact is considerable.

I've only been in Meridian briefly, but I could tell it was a major city long before Jackson was. The downtown seemed very densely packed and was clearly bustling at one point. It almost reminded me of an old city in the Midwest Rust Belt. Apparently it was Mississippi's largest city until the early 20th century when Jackson took over. Nothing wrong with Jackson, and it has some nice neighborhoods, but Meridian seems to have a lot more architectural heritage. I hope someone with some $$$ someday rediscovers the town; from what I gather, it's still losing population.

I wouldn't mind owning one of those old tank built homes in Meridian. I'm sure they are going pretty cheap compared to Jackson real estate.

I heard that HRI Properties [same company that renovated the King Edward] is trying to start up some projects in Meridian.
